Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 50 with Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com
For our 50th episode, we bring back friend to the show, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. The site is fresh off their updated rankings for each MLB team.
Before bringing in Jonathan, Patrick and I discuss the recent trade. Brandon Maurer, Ryan Buchter, and Trevor Cahill were shipped to KC on Monday, and we discuss the trade between ourselves. The trade might have been tough for some Padre fans to see, but the return of prospects is necessary for the rebuild to continue as scheduled.
Travis Wood is an interesting return and we speculate on how much Darren Balsley will factor in his value moving forward. Truth be told, I like Travis Wood and we should expect to see a rebound in his value while he pitches for the Padres. At least I hope.
Once Jonathan is introduced, we discuss the state of the Padres.
He describes the team as “interesting”, but admits he does not see a lot of the team. He is familiar with the progression of the system though and is well aware of the players that are already at the major league level. Hunter Renfroe, Austin Hedges, Wil Myers, and Manuel Margot provide an excellent young nucleus and all three of us agree the future is bright in SD.
Mackenzie Gore is discussed, as Jonathan is quite familiar with the young man. He tells us that Jim Callis had Gore as his #1 pick. The Padres are certainly excited with what they have with this young man.
In reviewing some more players from the 2017 draft, Jonathan gives us his thoughts on Mason House, Luis Campusano, and Blake Hunt. All three high school players are showing excellent skills early and we learn a little more about each young man.
We could not make it through the show without talking Fernando Tatis Jr. Patrick asks for a comparison between Tatis and Luis Urias in terms of value. Jonathan recently had Fernando Tatis on his podcast and enjoyed discussing the young man with us. Urias has been very impressive too and it was interesting hearing Mayo compare the two infielders.
This discussion led to a conversation about the value of Mackenzie Gore verses Cal Quantrill. Jonathan talks about the two pitchers, and its quite fascinating to hear what he has to say about the them in terms of upside and ability.
Michel Baez and his rise to fame was discussed as well. Jonathan is well aware of who he is and all eyes are certainly on this young man. He is now ranked #7 in the Padres system. Amazing how quickly he has risen through the rankings.
This was an excellent show and we want to thank Jonathan again for coming on. Check out MLB.com (like you aren’t already) and “geek out” on all the content they provide about this game we all know and love.

Great podcast as usual. You should try to get Jim Callis on so we can hear him drool over Gore. 🙂 But seriously, would it be possible to get Mike Rosenbaum on as I think he is the one who does the Padres top 30 for MLB.com. It would be nice to hear from someone who is a little more invested in the Padres system than Mayo seems to be. Thank you.
Thank you… we will work on that
