Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 103 with James and Patrick

The Padres EVT Podcast is back.
There is plenty to discuss about the team, so the two of us found time for a podcast.
Wil Myers started the game on Monday at third base for the Padres. We talk about this and the excitement it brings. We also discuss Myers’ value, as plenty of people have various opinions on the player. Patrick throws out some numbers that cannot be debated as far as determining Myers’ true worth.
We speak briefly about Jose Pirela and the fact that Luis Urias is still in the minors. Frustrating.
Hunter Renfroe has been on fire as of late, but are his numbers something to get excited about? We dissect the outfielder’s numbers for a bit.
Freddy Galvis has been a hot topic of debate in recent weeks on Twitter. Some fans really love what they see from Galvis and ignore the fact that his offensive numbers are down. Patrick and I debate a little bit about Galvis’ value as we talk about potentially signing him after the season.
Austin Hedges and Francisco Mejia provide a nice problem for the team, as both young catchers could be the future backstop for the Friars. We debate about the value of each. Can the team keep both or will they trade one of them this fall?
We briefly get into Jacob Nix‘ start, which was impressive. He is yet another young arm this team has at their disposal.
There were plenty of promotions in the last week or so. We go through some of them and talk about the fact that the team is starting to produce fruit.
In closing ,we try to determine if the club could potentially be positioning themselves for a big trade. More specifically, we discuss some pitching names.

All of this De Los Santos talk has to stop. He wasn’t going to be a part of the next good Padres team, so one way or the other he would have been dealt. Could he have been packaged with someone else to get a bigger name than Galvis, sure, but then who would that other player/prospect have been and who would have been coming back in return?
And the 40 man roster crunch we all seem to be worried about will easily sort itself out. There is a loy of fluff on the Padres 40 man the way it sits right now, so keeping all of the guys Preller and Co. deem fit, should not be an issue.
I could not agree more on the Wil Myers front. He bulked up over the off season to become more of a middle of the order threat and has had some bad luck injuries. He is one immensely talented player who has been moved around like crazy and as you guys say, he hasn’t once complained openly about all of the movement. Plus, if this experiment at 3rd works, he is going to be even more of an asset to the Padres in the future.
Great Podcast as usual, I particularly liked the F bomb Patrick dropped when he was all fired up about the Myers bashing. 🙂
While I agree that Freddy Galvis is not anywhere near Manny Machado, I do think he’s made the Padres less vulnerable for anything hit to the left side of the infield – almost everything last few years went through or was booted. Further, I know fans were enamored by Enyel de los Santos, but if he is so good, why isn’t he in the current rotation and I believe only ranked their 9th best prospect in a middle of the road farm system ? Where would he fit within the Padres’ long-range pitching prospects – probably not within the top 10 and certainly not within the top 5. There will be some wailing and gnashing of teeth when the Padres move any of these top prospects, but prospects are just that until they produce consistently in the majors. De los Santos may have been right there with Lucchesi, Nix, Lauer and Kennedy but those aren’t the Padres top pitching prospects! Bottom line is you have to give up something to make your on-the field product more watchable and Galvis has done that, albeit mostly on the defensive side; it was something they could afford to do because of their depth, so everyone should just get over it and come out and watch Freddy make those wonderful plays in the field.
