Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 101 (The Handless Padres Podcast)
Well. It happened. We knew it would, and it did. The San Diego Padres traded all-star closer Brad Hand.
The return?
How about the #15 prospect in all of baseball. Francisco Mejia. The catcher/outfielder is a switch-hitter with huge offensive upside.
The Padres scored with this trade and we gush a little about the Dominican player. Well at least not at the beginning.
In speaking about Mejia, we discuss where he will probably play defensively for the team down the road. He has the ability to play a corner outfield position or possibly third base, but it looks the Padres will get a good look at him behind the plate.
The trade freed up a 40-man spot for the Padres. We speculate about the open spot and also talk about the upcoming winter and the fact the Padres need to protect several players from the Rule-5 draft. It will be interesting to see what they choose to do in this regard.
Mejia adds to a farm system that is easily the best in all of baseball. We speak a little bit about the depth in the system.
Since the Padres have so many young players, we talk a little about the fact they could be positioning themselves to make a play at a young arm. There are plenty of young pitchers who could be had for the right prospect haul. We spitball a bit on this subject.
Two podcasts in a matter of days. Amazing.
