Padres Down on the Farm: September 8 (Amarillo advances to Texas League Championship/Tri-City evens Championship Series)

With the Lake Elsinore Storm resting for their Cal League Championship Series against the Visalia Rawhide that starts on Tuesday, only Amarillo and Tri-City were in action on the day. Three teams remain in play as we head into the second week of September.
The Soddies took three straight from Midland to advance on Sunday, and the Dust Devils won big in game two of their best of five series.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
Amarillo Sod Poodles Won 7-5 (wins series 3-2)
The Sod Poodles did it. The team came back from an 0-2 deficit, to win three in a row on the road in Midland. The sweep was completed on Sunday as a seven-run second inning powered the team. James Naile, the Midland starter could not get out of the inning. The big blow came from the bat of Ivan Castillo that made the game 7-0. A Kyle Overstreet bases-loaded double plated the first three runs of the game for the Soddies. Every single starter in the lineup recorded a hit in the game as Amarillo totaled 10 in the contest. Aaron Leasher started the game and went 4 2/3 innings for the Soddies. He gave up all four in the 5th inning and was relieved by Blake Rogers. Jordan Guerrero earned the win after throwing two innings of shutout ball. Left-handed pitcher Travis Radke got the last three outs for the save. The Soddies will start their series against Tulsa on Tuesday.

Tri-City Dust Devils Won 9-1 (series tied 1-1)
After dramatically losing on Saturday, the Tri-City Dust Devils took care of business in a 9-1 win over the Hillsboro Hops. Three pitchers combined on a three-hit, one-run effort for the Dust Devils. Connor Lehmann, the Padres 7th-round pick in June went the first two innings, allowing a run on two hits. The bullpen came in and shutout the Hops the rest of the way. Jasson Reynolds, a 32nd-round pick from this year’s draft earned the win after throwing four innings of work. Sam Keating saved the game for Tri-City, throwing the last three innings. Tre Carter and Jonny Homza went deep in the game. Homza’s blast in the first inning capped off a six-run effort and made the score 6-0. Tre Carter homered in the 5th and made the score 9-1. Luke Becker scored two runs in the win. 16 Tri-City batters struck out in the game, led by Nick Gatewood who was 0-for-4 with three K’s.
