Padres Down on the Farm: June 4 (Tatis in Amarillo/Lamet, Guerra & Patino Pitch For LE)

San Diego Padres affiliates went 3-2 on Tuesday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (37-21) Won 6-3
The Chihuahuas pounded out 11 hits and beat Iowa on the road by the score of 6-3 on Tuesday. soft-tossing left-handed pitcher Kyle McGrath started the game and went five innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out five. Gerardo Reyes followed him up with two scoreless innings of relief. Then Phil Maton and Eric Yardley ended the game for El Paso. The team put up six extra-base hits as they continue just to kill the baseball. Aderlin Rodriguez started at first base and went 0-for-4 with three K’s in his minor league debut. Franchy Cordero hit his second homer of the year, and Esteban Quiroz went deep for the ninth time this season.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (28-28) Lost 7-3
The Soddies dropped a game to Frisco on Tuesday by the score of 7-3. Emmanuel Ramirez pitched well, allowing two earned runs in seven innings pitched. Fernando Tatis Jr. made his second start in Amarillo and went 1-for-2 on the night with a walk and run scored. He looked well on the base paths and is very near 100 percent. Amarillo could not do much offensively as the team only managed seven hits in the game while only walking twice. Just not much was going on with the sticks for the Sod Poodles. The game was close in the middle innings, but the RoughRiders scored six runs in their last four innings at bat. Buddy Reed threw out a runner in deep right-center, which was very impressive. The runner tried to advance to third base on a flyball and was nailed by the outfielder in the second inning. Not much else went well for Amarillo as they also made two errors in the game (Ivan Castillo and Brad Zunica).

Lake Elsinore Storm (28-28) Lost 9-3
The Storm lost 9-3 on Tuesday but had three interesting pitchers take the mound for them. Dinelson Lamet made his second start since coming back from Tommy John surgery. He made it through 61 pitces and allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched. That put the Storm in a hole they could not recover from. Javy Guerra made his first showing in the Cal League and was clocked at 99 mph. Luis Patino also pitched for the Storm and threw two scoreless innings while striking out four. Lake Elsinore only managed five hits in the game as the team could not do much offensively.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (27-29) Won 4-3
The TinCaps came back late with two runs in the eighth to take a 4-3 victory over the Lake County Captains. Aldemar Burgos singled in one run, and Agustin Ruiz drove in the other on a sac-fly. Gabe Mosser was on the mound for the TinCaps and allowed three earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched. The right-hander now owns a 3.67 ERA in the Midwest League. Blake Hunt continues to hit the ball hard as he went 2-for-3 with a triple. His .232 batting average does not speak for all the hard contact he has made early this year. He could easily be hitting over .300 with a little better luck. Austin Smith earned the save out of the pen, throwing a perfect ninth while striking out two. That was Smith’s second save and his ERA is at 1.89 on the year. Jose Quezada improved to 4-1 on the year after earning the win in relief. He owns a 2.00 ERA so far this season.

DSL Padres (1-2) Won 9-5
The Padres DSL team totaled ten hits on Tuesday in a 9-5 win over the Blue Jays DSL team. Every batter but Albert Fabian struck out in the game for the Padres, but they still managed the win. Jose Garcia was solid in four innings, striking out six batters. He is an undersized left-handed pitcher from Venezuela. The 21-year-old is not regarded as a prospect, but his performance was worth noting. Infielder Wilmert Paula is a prospect with some upside. He went 3-for-5 in the game. The left-handed hitter from the D.R. is still only 17. Eduardo Hidalgo is also 17 and from Venezuela. The left-handed hitter went 2-for-4 on Tuesday. The DSL Padres team will take on the Blue Jays DSL team tomorrow once again.
