Padres Down on the Farm: July 5 (Austin Allen homers twice/Aaron Leasher solid for LE/Baez continues to pitch well in relief)

San Diego Padres affiliates were 3-5 on Friday.

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (53-34) Won 9-7

Chihuahuas’ catcher Austin Allen homered twice (again) and now has 12 dingers on the season. El Paso won in extras by a score of 9-7, as Allen’s second homer in the 10th inning was the difference. Esteban Quiroz also homered in the game and has 14 on the year in the PCL. Dillon Overton made a start and went five innings, allowing six earned runs. He has a 7.59 ERA so far this season. Trevor Megill, Andres Munoz, and Phil Maton were able to contain the Bees until Allen provided the winning runs in the 10th inning. Newly demoted Brad Wieck saved the game for El Paso, pitching a 1-2-3 inning and striking out two.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (40-43) Lost 5-3

The Frisco RoughRiders came into Hodgetown and walked away with a 5-3 win against the Soddies on Friday night. Nick Margevicius was on the mound, and the left-hander did not have his best stuff. Three different RoughRider hitters went deep off the lefty, as he allowed four earned runs on six innings pitched. He also committed an error on the mound. Michel Baez looked great once again for the Sod Poodles as threw two scoreless innings. He has a 2-2 record with a 2.60 ERA in his last ten games pitched. Edward Olivares has his OPS up to .837 after a 2-for-4 night at the plate. Not all was great for the Poodles’ hitters as Hudson Potts went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and Buddy reed went 0-for-3 with three K’s.

Lake Elsinore Storm (44-40) Won 4-1

23-year-old left-handed pitcher Aaron Leasher continues to pitch well for Lake Elsinore. He is 6-2 in his last ten games with a 3.72 ERA. Leasher went seven solid innings without allowing a single earned run. He struck out six in the win. Gabriel Arias went 2-for-3 and has a .721 OPS for the Storm. Luis Campusano singled in four at-bats and has a .919 OPS on the year in the California League. Tirso Ornelas went 0-for-3 in the game, and he struck out twice. His average has fallen to .203 on the season, and he has earned a .565 OPS.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (37-46) Lost 5-4

Three late runs off of Henry Henry were the difference in a 5-4 loss to the Lake County Captains. The TinCaps got a decent start from Omar Cruz. The 20-year-old left-handed pitcher from Mexico struck out eight in five innings while allowing two earned runs to score. He lowered his ERA to 5.19 in his second start in the Midwest League this 2019 season. Catcher, Juan Fernandez got a rare start behind the plate and went 2-for-4 with a double. Blake Hunt had the night off. Xavier Edwards recorded two hits in the loss and has a .812 OPS so far this season in Fort Wayne.

Tri-City Dust Devils (10-12) Lost 14-12

Tri-City made a run in the last four innings, but the seven runs they scored were not enough as the team lost 14-12 to the Boise Hawks. Eight runs in the first was a tough challenge for the Dust Devils, but they made a great run at it. Ninth-round pick Jason Blanchard was knocked around for five earned runs in 0.1 innings pitched. Matthew Acosta has an OPS of .847 on the year after a 4-for-5 day at the plate. Reinaldo Ilarraza hit his first homer of the season in the loss.

AZL Padres 1 (10-5) Lost 9-3

Five late runs in the eighth sealed a 9-3 win for the AZL Cubs over the AZL Padres on Friday. Frank Lopez was charged with the loss as he allowed two earned runs in four innings pitched. The 18-year-old Venezuelan has decent upside and is regarded as a prospect by the team. Dylan Coleman is working his way back from injury and pitched a scoreless inning for the team. Chris Givin and CJ Abrams both continue their onslaught against Arizona Rookie League pitching. Both men doubled in the game.

AZL Padres 2 (11-4) Won 4-3

The AZL Padres 2 team walked off against the AZL D-backs and won 4-3 in 10 innings. Luis Eusebio was awarded the win after throwing one inning of relief in the game. Bryan Mitchell made a start and went five innings, allowing two earned runs. He has a 6.23 ERA so far in the desert. Michel Miliano also pitched in the game and allowed a run, while striking out three. Jarryd Dale singled home the winning run in the 10th as Taylor Lomack scored on the play. Ethan Skender went 2-for-4 with a double in the win.

DSL Padres (13-17) Lost 10-8

The DSL Padres allowed five runs in the 8th inning to the DSL Orioles, and that was the difference in 10-8 loss on Friday. Half of the runs unearned as the DSL team made three errors on the day. 18-year-old Dwayne Matos made a start and was perfect in four innings pitched. The right-handed pitcher lowered his ERA 20 2.87 on the year in 10 games. Elias Batista was charged with the loss, as he allowed three earned runs in two innings pitched. 17-year-old Wilbert Paula and 17-year-old Neifi Antunez were the hitting stars as each man recorded two hits in the morning. Albert Fabian also earned two hits and his OPS is at .978 for the Padres.
