It was the Padres versus the Padres in Dominican Summer League action on Monday morning. Following a strikeout, team Brown drew a pair of walks. A bloop single from Nestor Chevalier loaded the bases for Ismel Diaz, who pulled a ball through the right side to score two runs with the help of a fielding error in right field. It ended Adan Moreno’s day after just 1.1 innings.
With one out in the top of the third inning, Oliver Carillo struck out but was able to reach first, thanks to a wild pitch. Carillo advanced to second thanks to a Hugo Sanchez walk. Yoiber Ocopio followed with a double, scoring both runners to tie the game. Josmar Acevedo ended up pitching four innings for team Brown, striking out three.
Team Brown scored a pair runs in the sixth inning, including an RBI double from Rasmes Velasquez. Despite walking in a run in the seventh, team Brown extended its lead to 5-3 on a bloop single from Alexander Garcia.
Team Gold didn’t go away quietly, however. With one-on, one-out, Carillo singled to center field. A fielding error by Gustavo Marquez allowed Emil Turbi to score and Carillo to make it all the way to third. Following a hit by pitch to Sanchez, Team Gold tied the game on a wild pitch. They would take the lead on an RBI single by Adrian Perez. An insurance run in the ninth gave team Gold a 7-5 lead and the win.
ACL Padres (Defeated ACL Mariners 8-3) (20-15 on the season)
Henry Martinez: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K
Romeo Sanabria: (3-for-4), R, 2B, 2 RBI, SB
Estuar Suero: (1-for-3), R, HR, 4 RBI
Homer Bush Jr: (1-for-3), R, HR, RBI
After a strikeout to lead off the inning, Alain Camou led off the bottom of the third with a line drive single to center. 2023 Padres sixth-rounder Jay Beshears reached first after getting hit. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Romeo Sanabria doubled to center, scoring two. The rally continued with a single and a walk, loading the bases for Estuar Suero, who would put the second pitch he saw over the left field fence, capping off a six-run inning.
Padres starter Henry Martinez ran into trouble in the fourth. After allowing a leadoff single, Martinez walked two straight batters. Luis Suisbel singled in two to get the Mariners on the board. Jared Sundstrom flew out to center, cutting the Padres lead in half. Martinez was pulled after that, ending what had been a really solid outing, striking out four in the first three frames.
Beshears walked to open the bottom half of the inning. Consecutive singles from Sanabria and Lamar King Jr. loaded the bases again. Still, nobody out, Juan Murillo blooped a single into right field, scoring Beshears. Sanabria coming in right behind him, was gunned down at the plate after getting caught in between third and home. King Jr. left the game with an ankle injury. Following the delay, Suero lined out to first, resulting in in an unassisted double play.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Homer Bush Jr. belted the first home run of his professional career over the left field wall to add to the Padres’ 8-3. Bush Jr, who was selected in the fourth of the draft earlier this month, is the son of former Padre draftee and minor leaguer Homer Bush.
There are legacy picks … and then there is Homer Bush Jr.
