Padres Down on the Farm: July 23 (Xavier Edwards collects four hits/Allen and Gettys homer for El Paso)
The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 1-3 on Tuesday as only four teams played.
Here is a brief recap of the day’s games.
El Paso Chihuahuas Lost 9-6 (61-46)
Bryan Mitchell has not had a good tenure with the Padres organization. After having a poor debut season with the team, Mitchell was designated for assignment and has since bounced around the Arizona League as well as El Paso. He has been hit hard at every spot, with today’s start against Las Vegas being no exception. The right-hander was tagged for 11 hits and eight runs in just 3.2 innings of work, bumping his ERA to an unsightly 15.00 mark. El Paso stayed in the game with home runs by Michael Gettys and Austin Allen, but the Chihuahuas never recovered after Mitchell’s blowup.
Josh Naylor: 4-5, RBI, Run Scored, 2 2B
Austin Allen: 3-5, HR, 3 RBI, Run Scored, 2B
Michael Gettys: 1-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 Run Scored, K
Bryan Mitchell: 3.2 IP, 11 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 4 K (95 pitches-63 strikes) Loss
Trevor Megill: 2.1 IP, H, BB, 4 K (46 pitches-31 strikes)
Amarillo Sod Poodles (51-48)
The Sod Poodles were off today.
Lake Elsinore Storm Lost 10-5 (52-49)
Lake Elsinore was looking to be on a roll after Gabriel Arias‘ RBI single in the top of the first inning put the Storm in front of the JetHawks. Then the JetHawks came up to bat in the bottom of the first inning. Lancaster pounced on starter Reiss Knehr for six runs in the first inning en route to scoring nine runs off of the right-hander in the 4.1 innings he pitched. Lake Elsinore scored in each of the next three innings, but it wasn’t nearly enough to scrape together a rally. Despite going 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position and their 2-through-4 hitters going a combined 8-for-15, Lake Elsinore couldn’t get enough run support for their pitchers.
Xavier Edwards: 4-5, Run Scored, CS, E
Luis Campusano: 2-5
Gabriel Arias: 2-5, RBI, Run Scored, 2 K, E
Reiss Knehr: 4.1 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 6 K (97 pitches-64 strikes) Loss
Nick Kuzia: 3 IP, H, R, 2 BB, 5 K (53 pitches-33 strikes)
Fort Wayne TinCaps (44-54)
The TinCaps were off today.
Tri-City Dust Devils Lost 15-4 (16-23)
It was not a good day to be a pitcher for Tri-City. Every player who took the mound, save for position player Kelvin Alarcon, allowed at least one run to cross the plate. Start Jason Reynolds failed even to record an out, allowing six runs on three hits and three walks. Ramon Perez relieved him and allowed four more runs to score in the first inning. He would allow six runs in 2.1 innings of work. Felix Minjarez allowed two unearned runs while Connor Lehmann allowed just one in three innings. The Dust Devils didn’t score their first run until the fourth inning when Spokane was already ahead by 12 runs.
Kelvin Melean: 3-4, Run Scored
Jonny Homza: 3-3, 2B, BB
Matthew Acosta: 1-3, RBI, 2 Runs Scored, BB
Jason Reynolds: 0 IP, 3 H, 6 ER, 6 R, 3 BB (29 pitches-10 strikes) Loss
Connor Lehmann: 3 IP, 3 H, ER, R, BB, 2 K (48 pitches-28 strikes)
AZL Padres 1 (17-11)
The AZL Padres 1 squad were off today.
AZL Padres 2 (18-10)
Like the AZL Padres 1, the AZL Padres 2 were off today.
DSL Padres Won 9-3 (19-25)
While the DSL Blue Jays commanded the scoreboard for most of the game, a seven-run eighth inning catapulted the Padres into the lead for a victory. The Padres were down 3-2 in the eighth inning, but two walks and a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt brought the tying run into score. After a sacrifice fly brought in another run, Wilmert Paula slapped a double to bring in another run. He had three hits in today’s game. Andelson Arias scored two runs by hitting a double to left field, and he would score on the next play when Reginald Dowston cleared the fences for the second time this season. The Padres went 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Wilmert Paula: 3-4, RBI, Run Scored, 2B, 3B, E
Reginald Dowston: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 Runs Scored, 2B
Andelson Arias: 1-4, 2 RBI, Run Scored, 2B
Neifi Antunez: 1-4, RBI, Run Scored, BB, K, SB
