Padres Down on the Farm: July 23 (Bush, Tirso & Valenzuela homer/Davila impressive in DSL)
San Diego Padres affiliates went 1-6 on Tuesday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 4-1 to Salt Lake) (40-57 on the season)
Tirso Ornelas– (1-for-3) HR, RBI, Run, BB
Eguy Rosario– (1-for-4) 2 K
Carl Edwards Jr.– 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (84 pitches- 54 strikes)
In a low-scoring effort, the Chihuahuas lost to Salt Lake by the score of 4-1. Carl Edwards Jr., signed by the Padres a few weeks ago, is being stretched out and went 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Not sure if the Padres envision Edwards as a possible solution in the rotation moving forward. Tirso Ornelas homered for the 14th time of the season in the loss. Lake Bachar threw 2.1 shutout innings, striking out five batters for El Paso.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 9-5 to Midland) (43-46 on the season)
Brandon Valenzuela– (2-for-3) HR, 2 RBI, 2 Runs, K
Cole Cummings– (1-for-4) HR, RBI, Runs, 2 K
Ryan Bergert– 2 IP, 1 H, 2 K (26 pitches- 20 strikes)
Midland outscored the Missions late in their 9-5 win. San Antonio got out to an early lead, but the bullpen surrendered all nine runs after Ryan Bergert went the first two innings. Miguel Cienfuegos, David Morgan, and Carter Loewen each allowed multiple runs in the game. Catcher Brandon Valenzuela continues to show progression with the bat, as the switch-hitter slugged his 9th homer of the season in the loss. Cole Cummings also homered for the Missions.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 12-7 to Dayton) (37-54 on the season)
Homer Bush Jr.- (3-for-5) HR, 2 RBI, Run, K
Nick Vogt– (1-for-4) HR, 2 Runs, RBI, BB
Dylan Lesko– 4 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 3 K (75 pitches- 43 strikes)
The TinCaps got behind early and could not come back in a 12-7 loss to Dayton. Dylan Lesko started the game and continues to be plagued by wildness in and out of the zone. Lesko walked four batters in four innings and also allowed six earned on five hits. The stuff is there; he is struggling to find his mechanics presently. Homer Bush Jr. went 3-for-5 in the game with a homer and two runs driven in. Nick Vogt also homered in the loss for the TinCaps.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 9-7 to Visalia) (45-44 on the season)
Leodalis De Vries– (2-for-3) 2B, 2 Runs, BB
Rosman Verdugo– (2-for-5) 2B, 2 Runs, RBI
Luis Gutierrez– 2 IP, 3 H, BB, 2 K (61 pitches- 38 strikes)
Lake Elsinore lost 9-7 in a game they were leading 5-0 at one point. The Storm had the five-run lead after two innings, but a six-run top of the third ignited Visalia to the win. Luis Gutirrez started the game and did not allow an earned run to score in two innings of work. Will Varnette coughed up six in the third on four hits and a walk. Leodalis De Vries continues to swing a hot bat as the 17-year-old went 2-for-3 with a booming double of the leftt-centerfield wall. Rosman Verdugo was 2-for-5 in the loss with a double and two runs scored.
ACL Padres (Lost 5-4 to ACL Brewers) (23-35 on the season)
Lucas Dunn– (1-for-4) Run, RBI, K
Lamar King Jr.- (1-for-2) 3B, 2 Runs, BB
Jesus Lopez– 3.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
A three-run 7th inning was enough for the ACL Brewers as they beat the ACL Padres 5-4. Jesus Lopez started the game and went the first 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Miguel Valdez was charged with the loss as the 20-year-old right-handed pitcher allowed the decisive run to score for the Brewers. Lamar King Jr. was 1-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored, and Lucas Dunn was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
DSL Padres Brown (Lost 10-0 to DSL Royals) (8-26 on the season)
Isaac Ponce– (1-for-3)
Jhojan Downer– (1-for-3) BB, 2 K
Edinson Hernandez– 2 IP, 2 H, BB, 3 K
The Padres DSL Brown team was beaten 10-0 on Tuesday morning in the D.R. The Royals scored five runs in the second inning and never looked back. Dioncio Novo started the game and gave up five unearned runs in 1.2 innings of work. The Padres made seven errors in the game, led by 18-year-old shortstop Yorvin Morla, who made four himself. The team recorded only two hits in the game, which is a recipe for a lopsided loss.
DSL Padres Gold (Won 3-2 over DSL Guardians) (16-20 on the season)
Moises Valdez– (1-for-3) 2B, RBI, K
Kevin Hacen– (1-for-1) 2B, 2 RBI, Run, BB
Manuel Davila-5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, K
The Padres DSL Gold team won on a strong pitching effort from 16-year-old Manuel Davila. The Mexican right-hander has been very impressive this year for the Padres, holding a 3.19 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in 31 innings this season. Kevin Hacen doubled in two runs in the win, and Moises Valdez doubled and drove in a run for the Padres.
