Padres Down on the Farm: July 20 (Eguy Rosario 3 hits for EP)
San Diego Padres minor league affiliates went 0-4 on Saturday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 8-6 vs Sugar Land) (40-55 on the season)
Tirso Ornelas – 1 for 5
Eguy Rosario – 3 for 4, Two Doubles, Two RBI
Adam Mazur – 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 4 K (76 pitches, 47 strikes)
In a game delayed by inclement weather, Adam Mazur labored through four innings of work, allowing five runs. Mazur’s struggles at recording the third out of the inning continued, as three of the five runs came with two outs. Mazur limited the walks and struck out four in his outing. Jackson Wolf and Kevin Kopps each allowed runs in an inning of relief, and Jayvien Sandridge pitched a scoreless inning despite two walks. Eguy Rosario drove in two runs on two doubles, and Tirso Ornelas added an RBI of his own. Jose Azocar recorded three hits, including an RBI double in the game.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 8-5 vs Arkansas) (43-44 on the season)
Ripken Reyes – 1 for 3, RBI Double
Marcos Castanon – 1 for 4, RBI Double
Austin Krob – 3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 2 K (78 pitches, 42 strikes)
Missions starter Austin Krob had a difficult outing, allowing five runs in 3.2 innings, the biggest blow coming off a second-inning three-run homer. Krob’s command has been inconsistent this season, as this was the fourth instance in eight starts that he walked three or more batters. San Diego’s No. 9 prospect is having an up-and-down season in his first full season at Double-A, having tossed two strong starts before Saturday’s clunker. No. 13 prospect Marcos Castanon drove in a run with an RBI double, now batting .276 with a .400 on-base percentage in the month of July, his best month so far this season. Ripken Reyes also doubled in the game, and Cole Cummings drove in two runs.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 10-4 vs Lake County) (37-52 on the season)
Joshua Mears – 1 for 3, Three-Run Home Run
Kai Murphy – 1 for 3, Double
Braden Nett – 0.2 IP, 2 H, 5 R. 3 BB, 0 K (35 pitches, 16 strikes)
A six-run first inning for the Lake County Captains sank the TinCaps into an insurmountable deficit. Right-hander Braden Nett did not have his command, walking three and leaving with the bases loaded after 35 pitches. Keegan Collett surrendered a grand slam in relief, making the score 6-0 after one inning. Fernando Sanchez allowed five unearned runs in three innings of long relief, striking out five. The biggest swing of the game for Fort Wayne was a mammoth three-run home run off the bat of Joshua Mears. Mears has delivered excellent exit velocity results but continues to struggle with strikeouts (37.1% K rate this season).
Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 4-3 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (44-43 on the season)
Chase Valentine – 2 for 4, Double
Braedon Karpathios – 1 for 2, Home Run
Tom Cosgrove – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (15 pitches, 10 strikes)
Lake Elsinore had a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but they surrendered four unanswered in the fifth and sixth innings. Tom Cosgrove opened for the Storm, tossing a scoreless frame on rehab assignment. Jose Luis Reyes allowed three runs in 1.2 innings of relief, and Javier Chacon allowed the go-ahead run on three walks. The Storm loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity to lose 4-3.
