Padres Down on the Farm: July 2 (Gore dominates for Storm/Cantillo strikes out eight/Jankowski begins rehab assignment)
MacKenzie Gore pitched a seven-inning gem for the Storm, and Joey Cantillo tossed six innings of two-run ball for Fort Wayne.
The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 2-5 today. Both AZL teams were off today.
Here is a brief recap of today’s action.
El Paso Chihuahuas Lost 11-9 (51-33 on the season)
Travis Jankowski got his first taste of baseball action today, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before getting pulled for Boog Powell. The Padres are trying to take it slow with the center fielder and not rush him back to San Diego. Kyle McGrath got hit hard by the Fresno Grizzlies, allowing 11 runs in 5.2 innings pitched while striking out three and walking four. The Chihuahuas fought hard as Esteban Quiroz, Jose Pirela, and Austin Allen cracked home runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Grizzlies’ lead.
Austin Allen: 2-5, HR, RBI, 2 Runs Scored, 2B, K
Jose Pirela: 2-4, HR, 3 RBI, 3 Runs Scored, 2B, BB
Esteban Quiroz: 2-2, HR, 3 RBI, Run Scored, 2B, BB
Luis Urias: 2-5, Run Scored, 2 K
Kyle McGrath: 5.2 IP, 11 H, 11 R (10 earned), 4 BB, 3 K (96 pitches-60 strikes) Loss
Amarillo Sod Poodles Lost 7-1 (38-42 on the season)
While Adrian Morejon looked solid in another short start, the Amarillo bullpen was unable to keep the Sod Poodles in the game. After Morejon pitched two shutout innings and striking out two, Jesse Scholtens got hit hard for five runs through 3.1 innings of relief. David Bednar allowed two more runs to score, but Amarillo got an inning of scoreless relief from Dauris Valdez. Amarillo just had no answers for the Midland starter Brian Howard, who only allowed a single run due to an RBI single from Buddy Reed in the seventh inning. In his return to Double-A, Hudson Potts went 2-for-4 with two doubles in his second game back with the Sod Poodles.
Hudson Potts: 2-4, Run Scored, 2 2B, K
Buddy Reed: 1-3, RBI
Edward Olivares: 2-4, K
Adrian Morejon: 2 IP, BB, 2 K (37 pitch- 22 strikes) No Decision
Jesse Scholtens: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 5 K (78 pitches-45 strikes) Loss
Lake Elsinore Storm Lost 2-1 (42-39 on the season)
Despite a magnificent performance from MacKenzie Gore, the Storm fell to the Quakes after only scoring one run of support. In what may be his final start in a Lake Elsinore jersey, Gore struck out nine batters over seven innings while walking three batters and allowing three hits. Blake Rogers got the Storm to the ninth inning by tossing a shutout inning of relief, but an error, a single, and a double off Jordan Guerrero allowed the Quakes to walk off as winners. Eguy Rosario collected the only RBI for the team on a single in the eighth inning that scored Jeisson Rosario.
Allen Cordoba: 2-4, 2B
Eguy Rosario: 1-4, RBI, K, E
Olivier Basabe: 3-4, SB
MacKenzie Gore: 7 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 9 K (93 pitch-55 strikes) No Decision
Jordan Guerrero: 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 earned), K (15 pitches-9 strikes) Loss
Fort Wayne TinCaps Won 10-5 (37-43 on the season)
Joey Cantillo looked slightly mortal today through six innings as he allowed two runs to score on five hits, but he only walked one while striking out eight Captains to pick up the win. The TinCaps offense backed their starter up from the get-go as Blake Hunt hit an RBI single while Justin Lopez followed with a two-run home run on the next at-bat. Lake County picked up their two runs off Cantillo in the bottom of the first inning, but Xavier Edwards put the team back on track with a two-RBI triple in the second inning and a swipe of home on a double steal. The second baseman is now hitting .340/.395/.419 with 20 stolen bases at Low-A, and it seems like the time is now to challenge him with a promotion to Lake Elsinore.
Xavier Edwards: 2-4, 3 RBI, Run Scored, 3B, BB, SB, CS
Blake Hunt: 2-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 Runs Scored, K
Justin Lopez: 2-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 Runs Scored, K
Grant Little: 1-5, RBI, K
Joey Cantillo: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, BB, 8 K (88 pitches-53 strikes) Win
Tri-City Dust Devils Lost 3-2 (10-9 on the season)
Tri-City took an early lead, but a two-run eighth inning pushed the Emeralds over the top. Tre Carter put the Dust Devils in front with a two-run triple to right field that scored Alison Quintero and Jack Stronach in the second inning. Starting pitcher Nick Thwaits did his part, pitching five innings of one-run ball while striking out five batters. However, with Jake Sims pitching, the Emeralds scored twice on a walk and three singles to take the final lead. Tri-City got the tying run on base in the ninth inning, but a Stronach strikeout ended any hopes of a comeback.
Tre Carter: 1-3, 2 RBI, 3B, 2 K
Kelvin Melean: 2-4
Alison Quintero: 1-3, Run Scored
Nick Thwaits: 5 IP, 4 H, R, 2 BB, 5 K (76 pitches-49 strikes) No Decision
Jake Sims: IP, 3 H, 2 R, BB (23 pitches-14 strikes) Loss
DSL Padres Won 11-5 (12-15 on the season)
A series of multi-run innings led the Padres to the win as they collected six extra-base hits and eight walks in total. The Padres took the lead in the second inning when Reginald Dowston slapped an RBI single while a throwing error allowed both Dowston and Axcel Peralta to score. Abismael Paulino made the start today and went five innings and allowed just an unearned run while striking out four. Nerwilian Cedeno had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, 4 RBIs, and two walks to raise his batting average to .289 on the season. He has now collected thirteen walks against five strikeouts.
Nerwilian Cedeno: 3-3, 4 RBI, 2B, 2 BB
Reginald Dowston: 3-3, 2 RBI, 3 Runs Scored, 2B, BB
Albert Fabian: 2-5, RBI, 2B, 2 K
