Padres Down on the Farm: July 16 (Pirela homers twice for El Paso/Potts & Miller homer for Amarillo)
San Diego Padres affiliates went 3-4 on Tuesday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (57-39) Won 6-5 & Lost 5-3
In the first of two games, Jose Pirela singled home Travis Jankowski in a game that was being made up from early April. Tyler Higgins got the last three outs as Matt Szczur lined out to end the game.
In the second game, Jerry Keel allowed five earned runs in a 5-3 loss to the Reno Aces. Kyle Lloyd and Kaz Makita threw 3 2/3 innings pitched of scoreless ball. Luis Urias has still not returned from a shoulder injury, and the offense has struggled. The Chihuahuas only managed eight hits in the game and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Jose Pirela homered twice and now has 17 homers on the season in the PCL. Travis Jankowski stole his third base of the year and looks to be close to being 100 percent healthy.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (48-45) Won 10-4
Adrian Morejon made another “showcase” start for the Sod Poodles, and the lefty was perfect in two innings of work. He threw 21 pitches and lowered his ERA to 4.25 on the season. Lake Bachar relieved him and allowed four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Jean Cosme saved the game with a perfect 2 1/3 innings pitched. Three Soddies homered in the win as Hudson Potts (9), Owen Miller (9) and Kyle Overstreet (4) all went deep in the game. Luis Torrens and Edward Olivares recorded three hits in the game, and the Sod Poodles knocked out 14 total hits in the game.

Tri-City Dust Devils (14-18) Lost 4-0
Ignacio Feliz was charged with a loss in a 4-0 contest against the Vancouver Canadians. Feliz pitched well, allowing two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out five but did issue six free passes. The deciding factor was that Tri-City did not hit. The team only managed six hits in the game, and they went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

AZL Padres 1 (14-9) Won 3-1
Three AZL Padres 1 pitchers combined on a three-hit victory over the AZL Angels on Tuesday. Edgar Martinez made a start and went five innings. The 18-year-old Cuban right-handed pitcher now has a 3.26 ERA on the season. Andrew Dean relieved him and went two innings without allowing a run. Koty Fallon pitched the last two without allowing a base runner. He struck out four in the game and has a 2.25 ERA now on the year. 22-year-old Yirdi Francisco homered in the game and scored two runs. Tirso Ornelas was in Peoria and playing for the AZL Padres 1 team. He went 1-for-4 in the game with a stolen base.

AZL Padres 2 (15-8) Lost 12-10
The AZL Padres 2 team gave up four runs in the ninth and two in the tenth to lose 12-10 at the hands of the AZL Indians Blue team. Blake Baker and Anderson Polanco were knocked around in the last two frames of the game. Baker gave up three earned runs, while Polanco gave up the last two and was handed the loss. Three Padres prospects had two hits in the game as Michael Cantu, Junior Perez and Yeison Santana all had a good night.

The DSL Reds beat the DSL Padres by the score of 5-2 on Tuesday. 22-year-old Abismael Paulino started the game and went three innings, allowing two earned runs. Elias Batista earned the loss after giving up two earned runs in two innings of work. He has a 13.50 ERA on the season. The DSL squad only managed three hits in the game. They were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base in the loss.
