Padres Down on the Farm: August 23 (Katoh, O’Grady 2 RBIs each for EP/Merrill 3 hits in the ACL/DSL team wins again)
The San Diego Padres affiliates had a light day. The affiliates went 3-0 on the evening, with the Chihuahuas, ACL, and DSL teams in action.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 9-6 vs. Round Rock Express) (39-54 on the season)
Adrian Martinez– 5 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 5 Ks
Brian O’Grady– (1-for-4) double, 2 RBIs
Taylor Kohlwey– (3-for-5) two singles, double, run
Gosuke Katoh– (0-for-3) walk, 2 RBIs
The Chihuahuas went down 2-0 early after Round Rock scored a pair in the bottom of the first inning. The Chihuahuas responded with a run in the third and three in the fourth. Unfortunately, the Express plated three themselves in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead right back.
But, the Chihuahuas scored five combined runs in the final three frames to take the lead on a wild evening. Adrian Martinez got the nod and went five innings, giving up 11 hits and five runs–all earned– while striking out five. Martinez did give up three home runs, and if it weren’t for the Chihuahuas late offensive barrage, he would’ve been tagged with the loss.
Brain O’Grady and Gosuke Katoh combined for four of the team’s seven RBIs, as the Express gave up just seven earned runs on the evening. Taylor Williams came in for the Chihuahuas and escaped with the victory, tossing three innings while giving up just two hits and one run.

Samuel Zavala– (2-for-5) 3B, 2B, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, SB

The DSL Padres continued their winning way knocking 13 hits and 12 runs in a victory against the D-backs DSL team. Five players recorded multiple hits, including Jose Cordero, who slugged a homer and went 2-for-4 in the game. The 18-year-old outfielder has a .879 OPS so far this season in the D.R. Samuel Zavala is a speedy center fielder, and the 17-year-old left-handed hitter went 2-for-5 with two extra-base hits.
ACL Padres (Won 5-4 vs. Giants Orange) (17-21 on the season)Â
Jackson Merrill– (3-f0r-4) 2B, K
Justin Farmer– (1-for-2) Run, BB, K
John Andreoli– (2-for-2) HR, 4 RBI, Run, 2 BB
Victor Lizarraga– 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
The Padres ACL team outlasted the Giants in a 5-4 win in the desert. Jackson Merrill continues to swing a hot bat as he went 3-for-4 on the night and now owns a .852 OPS on the season. Veteran minor leaguer John Andreoli homered and got on base four times in the win. The 31-year-old is rehabbing in Phoenix with the ACL team. He should join the El Paso Chihuahuas shortly. 17-year-old San Diegan Victor Lizarraga started the game and got the first six outs for the Padres.
