Paddack and Padres blank Cubs 4-0

The San Diego Padres blanked the Chicago Cubs 4-0 on Wednesday.
Coming into the series, Chris Paddack against Cole Hamels was a great pitching matchup on paper.
The duo lived up to expectations on Wednesday early, as they dueled into the 5th inning. Hamels would not survive the frame though, as he was removed in the inning by Joe Maddon. Hamels allowed one run on four hits at the time in his 91-pitch effort. The Rancho Bernardo High alum now has a 3.89 ERA on the season.
In his 25th start of the season, Paddack threw 93 pitches and went six innings, allowing three hits and one walk. The big Texan struck out seven on the day and now has 144 on the year in 135 2/3 innings. He is finishing the season strong, and that precisely is what the Padres want to see from the right-hander. There are some reports that Wednesday’s start could have been his last for the year, Green refused to address that issue after the game. “Fastball command sets up everything for him,” Andy Green said after the game in regards to Paddack. “He is learning what he needs to do in order to be successful.”
Manuel Margot has been very impressive lately. The right-handed hitter seemingly robbed a home run off the bat of Nick Castellanos in the game, while also providing the Padres with their first run of the game on his 12th homer of the season. The speedy outfielder also beat out another base hit in the 7th inning. Margot showcased his baseball skills on the basepaths as he successfully pulled off a delayed steal in the game as well. For the second game in a row, Margot drove in the winning run. “He has played well in whatever role we have asked him to do,” Green told the media.

Ty France attempted a steal of home and was successful, thanks to an errant throw from former Friar’ Brad Wieck. Wil Myers drove in a pair of runs in the 7th to put the Padres up 4-0 at the time. He went 1-for-3 and is now 18-for-45 (.400) in his last 15 games.
David Bednar has still yet to allow a run in his first taste of major league action. In his first six games and 4 2/3 innings pitched, he has struck out eight batters and walked only one. The 35th-round pick in 2016 is showcasing a 94 mph fastball with a lethal combination of breaking pitches. His split-finger has slider-like movement to it, and the pitcher has refined a curveball this year which is proving to be very serviceable. He is one to keep tabs on for the 2020 season.
Trey Wingenter looked fantastic for the Padres on the night as he attacked hitters. The big right-hander threw two scoreless innings, striking out three in his appearance.”Two crisp innings from him tonight,” Green said.
The Cubs were shutout on three hits in a big game for the team as they drop into a tie with the Milwaukee Cubs for second place in the NL Central.
Thursday is a day game. 12:40 start time. The Padres will look for the series win tomorrow.
