Down on the Farm: Winter League Roundup- November 28
There were a total eight prospects in action on Tuesday throughout the globe.
The Australian Baseball League is off Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays, but they will return Thursday early morning.
We will keep you up to date on the four prospects down under.
DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE
Franchy Cordero was 1-4 on Tuesday with two runs, a double, and a strikeout. He is hitting .309 on the year with three homers and 13 RBI. Cordero has struck out 29 times in 127 at bats this year. He has walked only three times, which continues to be an issue. Cordero has played 34 games in the DR and has shown some really solid defense.
Miguel Diaz threw a scoreless inning, striking out one batter. He has a 6.75 ERA on the year so far. The 2018 season will be an interesting one for this right-handed pitcher. He could start the season in Double-A or Triple-A, and could even earn a bullpen spot out of the spring depending on how he looks in February and March.
MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE
Fernando Perez has received the most at bats out of all the minor leaguers. His 36 games and 144 at bats are tops, as are his seven homers, 29 RBI, and .987 OPS. Perez has found his stroke in Mexico while playing second, third, and first for his Mexican team. He went 2-4 with a run and RBI on Tuesday and is hitting .340 on the year.
Allen Cordoba was 1-4 with two strikeouts on the day. He has only played in seven games this season in Mexico and has surprisingly only played left field. His future as a shortstop seems questionable at this point. He could start 2018 in Triple-A.
Gerardo Reyes has a 1.93 ERA so far on the year. He is very impressive and took a step forward in 2017. The power arm should be able to climb the Padres’ minor league system. He went 0.2 innings pitched on Tuesday, striking out one and allowing one hit.
VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE
Luis Torrens has played a lot this winter after being relegated to bench duty for most of the 2017 season with the Padres. Torrens pinch ran on Tuesday and scored a run. The majority of his recent game action has been at first base and as a DH. His days behind the plate seem to be over for the time being.
Jose Ruiz threw a scoreless inning on Tuesday. He walked one batter and struck out another. His ERA is at 2.87 for the year in Venezuela. The right-handed pitcher will be a solid member of the Storm or Missions’ bullpen. He needs to work on some control issue to progress.
Trevor Frank, the San Diego native, went 0.2 scoreless innings on Tuesday. He has a 3.94 ERA on the year for his Venezuelan team.
