Down on the Farm: Winter League Recap- December 21

There were a total of six Padres in action on Thursday around the globe.

The Australian Baseball League’s All-Star Game took place early Thursday morning and the Padres had two men participating. Gabriel Arias and Lake Bachar both played in the game for the World Team, which battled the Australian Team. The World Team won 6-4.

In recent days, more Padre prospects and players are starting their seasons. Jose Rondon is playing now and so are Jose Pirela and Manuel Margot. Baseball is right around the corner. It is an exciting time of the year.

Here is a glimpse of Thursday’s action.

Australian Baseball League

Gabriel Arias was 0-4 with two strikeouts, a stolen base, and a run scored. Arias left five runners on base, but being only 17 and being invited to such an event (all-star game) is all the positive news you need. The shortstop has played well and has earned a lot of respect in Australia playing with and against veteran ballplayers.

Lake Bachar brought his 1.00 ERA in the ABL All-Star game, and was roughed up in his inning of work. He allowed three runs on two hits. Bachar also walked a batter and struck out another. Bachar gave up a dinger to Luke Hughes in the bottom of the fourth that hurt him. It is still a nice honor for this young right-hander, being invited to such an event.

Dominican Baseball League

Manuel Margot was 3-3 on Thursday with a double and a run. Margot is hitting .467 so far and the 2018 season can not get here soon enough. The talented outfielder will be a big part of the Padres’ plans in 2018 and beyond.

Franchy Cordero was 1-3 with a strikeout on Thursday. Cordero is hitting .323 on the year in the D.R. Will he see any playing time in 2018 for the Padres? I guess that all depends on A.J. Preller and what he has in mind.

Christian Bethancourt started behind the dish and went 0-2 in the D.R. He has been catching mostly, so a return there seems to be in his future. His days on the mound could be done. Bethancourt was released by the club early in the winter and could surface somewhere. We shall see.

Mexican Baseball League

Fernando Perez was playing in Mexico on Thursday and went 1-4 with a RBI and a strikeout. He started at second and is hitting .298 on the season. He has had a very impressive winter, and could start the season in San Antonio once again this spring.

Gerardo Reyes allowed one run on two hits on Thursday. He also walked a batter and struck out one in his 0.2 innings of relief. Reyes has a 2.21 ERA so far this year. The hard-throwing, right-handed relief pitcher will probably start in Double-A this season and could be seen in a Padre uniform rather soon.
