Down on the Farm Report: August 19 (Margevicius Pitches Well, France Walks Off)

San Diego Padres affiliates were 3-3 on Sunday.

Here’s a recap of the day’s action:

El Paso Chihuahuas (73-52) Won 8-7

The start by Colin Rea only lasted three innings, but he only allowed one unearned run in his start. Raffy Lopez led the offensive charge, with two hits and an RBI, along with two walks and two runs scored. Javier Guerra also had two RBI with a run scored, while Shane Peterson had three hits with a run scored and an RBI. Luis Urías also notably added a hit with two runs scored and an RBI. The pitching wasn’t great, but the offense was better and the team won the game versus the 51’s on Sunday. The team only walked twice, but they added enough hits that their patience wasn’t much of a concern during their game.

The start from Lake Bachar was solid, as he only surrendered two runs and walked five while also striking out five hitters. Austin Allen had a hit with a run scored and an RBI and Hudson Potts had a hit in four at-bats. Other than those hits, there were no real offensive highlights for San Antonio. The offense only mustered three hits, and left nine runners on base in the loss. If the offense had been more impressive, there would have been a much more interesting game for the Missions on Sunday. The new players in Buddy Reed and Hudson Potts from Lake Elsinore are not playing particularly well, as they’re hitting .161 and .188, respectively.

Lake Bachar: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 5 K’s

For the first time during his tenure as a member of the Lake Elsinore Storm, lefty starter Nick Margevicius looked fully comfortable. He threw six innings and only allowed two unearned runs, allowing none earned along with one walk and six strikeouts in his start for the team. David Bednar came on in relief and threw two shutout innings before the bullpen finished off the game for the win. Nate Easley led off in the lineup and scored a run with two hits, while Brad Zunica added three hits with three RBI and a run scored with a walk. Shortstop Chris Baker also added two hits with a run scored in the victory. Luis Torrens didn’t get any hits, but scored a run in his four at-bats, also walking once.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (59-64) Lost 5-3

Mason Thompson made a decent start for the TinCaps on Sunday, as he threw five innings and allowed three earned runs. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out four in his outing for Fort Wayne. Right fielder Jack Suwinski had two hits and two RBI, while Jalen Washington smacked a solo home run. Gabriel Arias had a two-hit game, and Esteury Ruiz had a hit with a run scored. It was a loss in which the offense didn’t provide enough production to back up decent pitching. It was a largely nondescript game as the TinCaps played mediocre baseball in terms of pitching and hitting.

AZL Padres 1 (24-24) Won 10-9

Luarbert Arias‘ start for the team on Sunday was solid, as he threw four innings while allowing two earned runs while striking out three hitters. The bullpen gave up another six earned runs, but the team’s offense was good enough to hold up the lead on the night. Luis Almanzar had two hits with a run scored and an RBI, while Nick Gatewood had four hits with three runs scored and an RBI. Jaquez Williams also had four hits with three RBI in the victory, and Agustin Ruiz had a hit with two runs scored along with an RBI. The offense was so good that the disappointing pitching performance didn’t matter in the end as the team eked out the win.
