The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 2-4 on Friday.

Here’s a recap of the day’s action.

San Antonio Missions (53-57)

Game 1 – Won 4-1 in 7 innings

Logan Allen didn’t allow a hit until he had two outs in the fifth inning. Allen was given a long leash with the doubleheader, as he threw 108 pitches. That is the most he has thrown in a game all year and the fifth time he reached the 100-pitch mark. Andres Munoz picked up his second save for the Missions when he came in for the last out of the game. Fernando Tatis Jr. extended his hitting streak to 13 in the first game of the doubleheader. Tatis got the offense off to a fast start when he singled to lead off the game and then stole second (15). Josh Naylor has now started 54 games in left field and 25 games at first this year.

Game 2 – Lost 2-1 in 7 innings

The Missions were probably a little worn out as they only registered four hits and were charged with two errors in the second game of the day. After extending his hitting streak earlier in the day, Fernando Tatis failed to record a hit in this one. Eguy Rosario made a surprising appearance for San Antonio as he had been with Lake Elsinore all year. I’m not sure if this was just an extra man for the doubleheader or if this will be a more permanent call-up. Josh Naylor moved back to first for this one and Ty France was off his feet at DH. Austin Allen was charged with his fifth catcher interference. Kyle Overstreet continues to bounce around as he has made at least ten starts this year at catcher, first base, and third base. Chris Paddack was charged with the unusual 6-inning complete game loss. Paddack provided another solid six innings for the Missions though. He has mostly stayed around the 75-80 pitch mark so far this year, topping out at 83.

Lake Elsinore Storm (43-50) Lost 6-2

The top of the storm lineup (Easley, Ona, Olivares) struggled to get on base as they combined to go 0-for-11 with a walk and four strikeouts. Hudson Potts hit his 14th home run as well as his 29th double on the year. Brad Zunica had two hits and was charged with his 11th error at first base. Allen Cordoba has been much better over the last week and is currently on an eight-game hitting streak. Over that time, he has seen his OBP rise almost 100 points from .107 to .205. Cordoba also stole his third base on the year. After throwing six innings of shutout ball in his first start with Lake Elsinore, Nick Margevicius had a bit of a hiccup in his second appearance. Carter Capps has now thrown two innings in his last four appearances. He’s gone more than one inning in six of his last seven outings.

It was a sloppy day in the field for the TinCaps as they were charged with five errors. Esteury Ruiz made a fielding and a throwing error at second base, which brings him to sixteen on the year. Tirso Ornelas made a fielding error in center (7). Kevin Melean was charged with a throwing error (2) and first baseman Nick Feight made his first error of the year. With Luis Campusano and Juan Fernandez getting the night off behind the plate, Jalen Washington was in the squat and allowed two passed balls (4). On a positive note, Kevin Melean continues his hot hitting and is now on an eight-game hitting streak that started on July 1st.

Aldemar Burgos had his modest five-game hitting streak come to an end. Grant Little was back in the lineup for the second straight day after getting five days off in a row. Both Burgos and Little threw a guy out at home trying to score. Owen Miller continues to do his thing by reaching base twice via a walk. Olivier Basabe has a hit in eleven of his last twelve games. 19-year old Sam Keating is still getting his feet under him as he made his fifth start for Tri-City.

Shortstop Yeison Santana and starting pitcher Mauricio Rodriguez will be participating in the DSL All-Star game on Sunday. Santana has more walks than strikeouts (29/25) which has pushed him to a .412 on-base percentage. Rodriguez owns a 2.05 ERA over 30.2 innings. Luis Paez continues to hit at the top of the Padres lineup and is getting on-base at a .363 clip. Emmanuel Guerra hit his third home run of the season in the top of 7th to help the Padres put up a 10 spot in the frame. Eudi Asencio has allowed one earned run or less and lasted at least five innings in three of his last four starts. Sergio Carrizoza has been good in relief, allowing runs in only two of his nine appearances and four of five runs in one outing.

My grandfather, Ed Kirkpatrick, played Major League Baseball in the 60’s and 70’s. He played for several teams including the Angels, Royals, Brewers, Pirates, and Rangers.
