Down on the Farm: (Cal Quantrill Strikes Out 10 & a Buddy Reed Walk-off)
The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 3-1 on Sunday.
Here’s a quick recap of the action:
El Paso Chihuahuas (28-30) Won 5-0
The El Paso Chihuahuas were carried to a shutout victory thanks to seven shutout innings from Dillon Overton. The right-hander only got three strikeouts, but he generated enough weak contact to keep him the Sacramento hitters off balance. RBI singles by Javy Guerra, Allen Craig, and Brett Nicholas would buoy the El Paso offense while Carlos Asuaje went 3-4 at the plate.
Carlos Asuaje: 3-4, 2B
Javy Guerra: 1-4, RBI, K
Allen Craig, 2-4, RBI, R
Brett Nicholas: 1-4, RBI, R, K
Dillon Overton: 7 IP, 2 H, 3 K (85 pitches-55 strikes) Win
San Antonio Missions (35-21) Won 6-0
The Missions rebounded well from last night’s loss by shutting out the Springfield Cardinals. Cal Quantrill had his best start of the season, throwing seven innings of shutout ball while striking out ten batters. The San Antonio offense was led, surprisingly, by Matt Batten who, in a spot start for Fernando Tatis Jr., had a four RBI day thanks to a grand slam in the eight inning. Austin Allen, Michael Gettys, and Peter Van Gansen each had multi-ht games.
Matt Batten: 1-4, Grand Slam, 4 RBI, R, BB
Michael Gettys: 2-4, 2B, 3B, BB, K
Austin Allen: 3-5, 2B
Peter Van Gansen: 2-5, R
Cal Quantrill: 7 IP, 3 H, BB, 10 K (97 pitches-62 strikes) Win
Lake Elsinore Storm (28-29) Won 7-6
On a day that saw Ronald Bolanos leave after 3 1/3 innings, the Storm picked up their starter by climbing back from a three-run deficit to win the ballgame on Buddy Reed‘s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning. The walk-off hit was Reed’s first hit of the game and let the Storm sweep the Inland Empire 66ers. The game couldn’t have been won without 5 2/3 scoreless innings from relievers Austin Smith, Emmanuel Ramirez, and Colby Blueburg and a two-run home run from Hudson Potts.
Hudson Potts: 1-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB
Edward Olivares: 1-3, 2 R, BB
Buddy Reed: 1-4, RBI, BB, K, walk-off hit
Kelvin Melean: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 R, BB
Ronald Bolanos: 3 1/3 IP, 6 H, 6 R (4 earned), 2 BB, 7 K (81 pitches-46 strikes) No Decision
Fort Wayne TinCaps (26-29) Lost 3-1
Despite Luis Patino throwing four shutout innings, the TinCaps just couldn’t support him offensively. An unearned run in the third inning gave the Great Lakes Loons the lead, while runs in the fifth and seventh innings padded their lead. Fort Wayne would chip across a run thanks to a fielding error that let Tirso Ornelas score, but it would be the only source on offense for the TinCaps.
Luis Campusano: 2-5, K
Tirso Ornelas: 2-4, R, BB
Esteury Ruiz: 1-4, BB
Jalen Washington: 1-3, BB
Luis Patino: 4 IP, 4 H, R (unearned), 8 K (81 pitches-48 strikes) Loss
El Paso, San Antonio, Lake Elsinore, and Fort Wayne are off tomorrow.
The Dominican Summer League Padres will be playing the DSL White Sox.
