Down on the Farm: August 25 (Storm Win Wild Offensive Game, TinCaps Sweep Doubleheader)

The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres were 6-3 on Saturday.

Here is a recap of the day’s action:

El Paso Chihuahuas (77-53) Lost 8-5

A ten-game winning streak came to an unfortunate end after a bases-clearing triple in the eighth inning put the Tacoma Rainers ahead for good. Luis Perdomo lasted only two innings, giving up four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two, but it was Kyle Lloyd who allowed the eighth inning triple to Adam Law that put Tacoma ahead for good. Luis Urias and Forrestt Allday each had RBI doubles in the game, while Raffy Lopez and Javy Guerra both collected RBI.

San Antonio Missions (69-60) Lost 5-4

After tying the game up in the ninth inning, the Missions couldn’t scratch across one more run in the tenth inning as a run off Jason Jester allowed the Hooks to walk off as winners. Lake Bachar held his own just fine in seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking none. San Antonio initially held the lead thanks to a three-run third inning, but it took a two-out double by Austin Allen in the ninth inning to tie the game up and send it into overtime. Josh Naylor and Hudson Potts also had RBI in the game.

Lake Elsinore Storm (63-68) Won 8-7

A wild game for both offenses saw 27 total hits and a combined 15 runs for both sides as the Storm pulled ahead as the victors. Nate Easley was the MVP of the day, as he had four hits for three RBI, including a home run. Edward Olivares had two RBI for the team while Rod Boykin and Luis Guzman chipped in with one. Nate Margevicius pitched well in the offensive madhouse, allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched while striking out eight batters. David Bednar allowed a run in an inning and a third, but was still able to pick up his ninth save of the year.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (60-69) Won Game 1 3-2

The TinCaps, in a seven-inning game, scored two runs in the seventh inning to take the lead and saw Dan Dallas pitch a scoreless seventh to close the door on South Bend. Two runs were charged to starter Mason Thompson, who pitched four and one-third innings and struck out five while walking one. An Olivier Basabe home run put the TinCaps on the board in the fourth, but it was Gabriel Arias who tied the game with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning. Jalen Washington‘s sacrifice fly scored Arias for the go-ahead run and Dallas would get his first Fort Wayne save in the bottom half of the inning.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (61-69) Won Game 2 3-2

The script of the second game of the doubleheader was almost flipped to the opposite of the first game, with South Bend making a comeback in the seventh inning. However, Dylan Coleman buckled down and got the final out of the game with a runner on second to secure the victory. Reiss Knehr and Evan Miller each pitched three scoreless innings, while striking out four batters each. Michael Cantu II did a majority of the damage for Fort Wayne, hitting an RBI double in the second, then homering in the fourth inning. Jeisson Rosario also homered to lead off the fourth inning.

Tri-City Dust Devils (32-35) Won 4-2

Winning for the third time in four days, the Dust Devils got great games out of Xavier Edwards and Michael Curry. Edwards lived up to his reputation as “table setter” in the leadoff spot, collecting two hits and scoring twice while drawing three walks, setting up the rest of his team to drive in runs. Curry did just that, driving in two runs on two hits, while Blake Hunt and Luis Asuncion also had an RBI to their name. Starter Cole Bellinger had a good rebound start, allowing only a run on two hits while striking out three in five innings pitched.

AZL Padres 1 (25-29) Won 6-3

The Padres scored a quick five runs in the first two innings of the game and added an extra insurance run in the fourth inning to beat the AZL Brewers. Luarbert Arias guided the Padres to the win thanks to his five innings of one-run ball. Dalton Erb pitched the final two and one-third innings to earn his first save of the season. Agustin Ruiz drove in two runs with a bases-clearing triple, while both Nick Gatewood and Yerry Landinez had three hits in the game. Luis Almanzar and Greg Lambert also had RBI hits in the game.

The Padres 2 only got three hits and the two runs allowed by Michell Miliano was enough to tag him with the loss. Only Elvis Sabala had an RBI hit in the eighth inning, driving in Jordy Barley for the only Padres run of the game. Sean Gulibe and Alison Quintero were the only other players to have base hits in the game. Miliano lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out three. Pitching five and one-third innings was Luis Eusebio, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out three.

A consistent stream of runs and a strong start from Jesus Gonzales carried the DSL Padres to a well-earned victory. Gonzales lowered his ERA to 2.20, going five scoreless innings and striking out five batters while allowing only four hits on the day. Two Padres had home runs, as both Junior Perez and Vladimir Echavarria left the yard. Brandon Valenzuela picked up an RBI of his own.
