Down on the Farm: August 24 (Lauer Starts for El Paso, Patino Pitches Well)

El Paso Chihuahuas (77-52) Won 3-1
Eric Lauer was making his second rehab start and was very effective for the Chihuahuas, going 3.1 shutout innings. The Rainiers could not get anything going against the five El Paso’ pitchers that toed the rubber on Friday. Only Colin Rea allowed a run. Rowan Wick, Colten Brewer, and Carter Capps all had scoreless appearances. El Paso managed nine hits on the night as Raffy Lopez, Shane Peterson, and Brett Nicholas all recorded two hits a piece. Luis Urias went 1-for-3 with a walk on the night.

San Antonio Missions (69-59) Won 1-0
Four Missions’ pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout of the Rough Riders on Friday. Emmanuel Ramirez started the game off and went six strong. He was followed by Trevor Megill, Elliot Ashbeck, and Andres Munoz. Pumping in triple-digit fastballs, Munoz once gain recorded a save for the Missions (his seventh of the year). Kyle Overstreet went 3-for-3 and Peter Van Gansen recorded two hits in the victory.

Lake Elsinore Storm (62-68) Lost 9-8
Dauris Valdez and Caleb Boushley could not secure a three-run lead as the JetHawks walked off against the Storm on Friday night. Valdez gave up three earned runs without allowing an out. Boushley entered the game and gave up a walk-off homer to Vince Fernandez. A.J. Kennedy homered and drove in three and Edward Olivares went 2-for-4. Eguy Rosario went 0-for-5 in the game and struck out all five times.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (59-69) Lost 3-2
Luis Patino was on the mound for Fort Wayne on Friday. The right-hander had his usual stuff on the mound as he went six solid innings for the TinCaps, lowering his ERA to 2.16 on the year. Unfortunately, he failed to get run support, as the offense only recorded four hits in the game. Danny Sexton was handed the loss in his two innings of relief. Jalen Washington got the start at first base and hit his eighth home run of the year. Owen Miller continues his assault on Midwest League pitching, as he is hitting .364 now on the year.

Tri-City Dust Devils (31-35) Won 5-4
An 11th inning run was the difference for Tri-City, as they beat Eugene 5-4 on Friday. Tyler Benson singled to left, scoring Michael Curry for the go-ahead run. Joe Galindo was able to record the final three outs to preserve the win for the Dust Devils. Blake Hunt continues to hit well recently as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles. The backstop batted cleanup and is hitting .278 in his last 10 games.

AZL Padres 1Â (24-29) Lost 8-3
The AZL Padres lost 8-3 to the AZL Rangers as four late runs off Tijuana native Martin Carrasco broke the game open. Carrasco allowed all the earned runs in his lone inning while giving up seven hits. He has had trouble this season against minor league hitting and could take some time to develop. Alexuan Vega started the game for the team and went 2.2 innings allowing three earned runs. 19-year-old, right-hander Edwuin Bencomo came in and was effective, but was given the loss on the night. Right fielder Augustin Ruiz got two of the seven Padres hits on the night.

AZL Padres 2Â (24-28) Won 10-9
The AZL Padres held on to a 10-9 win as Trent Shelton got the last four outs of the contest against the Royals AZL team. The lefty from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has pitched well this season in the AZL, recording a 2.73 ERA in his first 29 innings pitched. Noel Vela started the game and only went 2.2 innings as his defense let him down. Vela was the victim of five unearned runs as Jordy Barley and Sean Guilbe both made errors. Guilbe did hit his fourth homer of the year in the first inning for the Padres. Jason Pineda and Alison Quintero both had two hits as the Padres collected 10 in total while walking nine times.

18-year-old Sergio Carrizoza improved to 4-2 on the year with a victory on Friday against the DSL White Sox. His ERA is at 1.85 now on the year in 43 innings pitched. The Mexican right-handed pitcher has decent size and could be a viable prospect in the future. 17-year-old Emmanuel Guerra hit his 7th homer of the year, as the big right-handed hitter has continued to display plus power. Catcher Brandon Valenzuela drove in two runs with a triple. Second baseman and leadoff hitter Luis Paez went 2-for-4 in the second to last regular season game for the DSL team. The season finale will be tomorrow morning against the DSL White Sox.
