Down on the Farm: August 23 (Baez and Quantrill With Quality Starts)

The San Diego Padres’ minor league affiliates went 2-4 on Thursday.

Here’s a recap of the day’s action:

El Paso Chihuahuas (76-52): Won 14-2

Tenth-ranked Padres prospect Cal Quantrill shined Thursday, as the Chihuahuas rolled to a 14-2 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes. The 23-year-old right-hander pitched six innings, scattering seven hits across those frames. He surrendered just one earned run, and notched his second win of the season. On offense, third baseman Ty France, right fielder Forrestt Allday, and center fielder Dusty Coleman led the way for El Paso. Each of the three players homered on the night, driving in ten runs collectively. Second baseman Luis Urias also chipped in with two hits of his own, singling in the third, and doubling in the seventh inning.

San Antonio Missions (69-54): Lost 4-3 (11)

The San Antonio Missions dropped their fourth consecutive game, losing an extra innings affair to the Frisco RoughRiders 4-3 in 11 innings. They did so despite a strong start on the mound from seventh-ranked Padres prospect Michel Baez, who went six innings and surrendered just one earned run. However, Frisco led for nearly the entire game, scoring two runs in the second inning, before allowing the Missions to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth with two runs of their own. Each team traded off with single runs in the 10th inning before the RoughRiders finished the Missions off with another run in the top of the 11th.

Lake Elsinore Storm (62-67): Lost 7-6

Though the Storm rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a late-game, 6-4 lead, Lake Elsinore surrendered their advantage just as fast as they earned it. They allowed the Inland Empire 66ers to plate three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 lead, and steal a victory on the road by the same margin. Shortstop Chris Baker went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while six other storm players had one hit each on the night. 23-year-old righty Pedro Avila threw six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with ten strikeouts.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (59-58): Lost 9-6

Ben Sheckler struggled on the mound early for Fort Wayne, dooming the TinCaps to a 9-6 defeat after surrendering eight runs on nine hits through 3 1/3 innings pitched. However, Gabe Mosser and Austin Smith combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings after Sheckler’s departure, allowing just one hit in the remainder of the game. On offense, shortstop Owen Miller doubled three times, driving in one in the process. Right fielder Jack Suwinski provided the power for Fort Wayne, clubbing a three-run homer as his only hit on the night. Despite Suwinski and Miller’s efforts, the TinCaps came up short, losing for the fifth consecutive game.

Tri-City Dust Devils (30-35): Lost 5-0

Though Angel Acevedo turned in a quality start on the hill, he earned a loss as Tri-City failed to rally with any offense behind him. A far cry from their 15-run explosion of last night, the Dust Devils squandered Acevedo’s seven innings of three-run ball, and their bats were quiet throughout the game. Right fielder Michael Curry had the Dust Devils’ lone hit of the night, a single.

DSL Padres (32-35): Won 6-1

Four Padres chipped in with runs batted in, Edgar Martinez turned in a strong start on the mound, and the DSL Padres earned a 6-1 victory over the DSL D-Backs. Behind Martinez’ six shutout innings on the mound, the Padres played small ball over the D-Backs, notching just one extra base hit in their win.
