Down on the Farm: August 14- Allen, Avila & Sheckler All Pitch Well
The San Diego Padres affiliates were 4-2 on Monday as the AZL Padres team and the Missions did not play.
The Chihuahuas were home against El Paso, and pulled out a 10-7 victory after scoring double-digit runs over their first four innings of the ball game. Dillon Overton went five innings for El Paso, but was roughed up allowing five earned runs. His ERA has now climbed to 7.44 on the year. Offensively, the Chihuahuas got three hits from Franchy Cordero and two hits from Travis Jankowski and Rafael Ortega. Ryan Schimpf also collected two hits as he smashed his 18th home run of the year.
San Antonio was off on Monday and will begin a series against the Springfield Cardinals on Tuesday.
Lake Elsinore lost despite a great start from Logan Allen. The left-handed pitcher went six shutout innings, but was the victim of a poor effort from Trevor Frank who allowed three runs on three hits in the seventh inning. The Storm only collected three hits on the night and could not get anything going offensively, losing 3-1. Chris Baker hit his fifth homer of the year, as he took 66ers’ starter Luis Pena deep with two out in the second inning.
Pedro Avila was back on the mound after his 17 K performance last week. He was not as dominant with his curve, but still got the win by going six strong innings in the 8-6 victory. G.K. Young got the start at first base and slugged a grand slam in the third inning. Hansel Rodriguez came on for his ninth save of the year, getting the final two outs of the game. Nate Easley went 4-5 for the TinCaps and Jack Suwinski went 2-4.
In Tri-City, the Dust Devils won 10-1 behind a great pitching performance by Ben Sheckler. The lefty went seven shutout innings and struck out six Hillsboro Hops. Tyler Benson went 2-3 out of the leadoff spot and Aldemar Burgos had three hits. Luis Almanzar slammed his second home run of the year, as he hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning of the game. Eliot Ashbeck threw a scoreless ninth for the Dust Devils, striking out two.
The AZL Padres team was off, but the AZL Padres 2 team played and was victorious 11-8. Ramon Perez went five solid innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. His 2.45 ERA is very solid and the 18-year-old, left-handed pitcher could be one to keep an eye on. Catcher Juan Fernandez hit a home run and drove in four runs, and Jose Rondon (on rehab from Triple-A) went 2-3 with two walks and two runs on the night. Mason House had a rough night, striking out in all five of his plate appearances. Joey Cantillo, a 17-year-old, left-handed pitcher is maintaining a 1.93 ERA early on in his pro career as he threw a scoreless inning, striking out four batters (a strikeout-wild pitch included).
THE DSL Padres continue to struggle, losing 12-0. The team only managed three hits on the night. The majority of this club is a work in progress.
