Chargers News: Malcom Floyd May Have Played His Last Game
It what has been a miserable season for the San Diego Chargers, no news might be more sad than the shoulder injury to Malcom Floyd and the fact the injury could keep him out for the rest of the year. Floyd has already indicated he is not coming back for the 2016 season and this will be his last as a professional football player. This injury could force the team to place him on I.R.
Floyd has had an excellent career. He will go down in Chargers history as one of the biggest down field threats in franchise history. He has made dozens and dozens of circus catches for huge chunks of yardage for the Bolts. He and Philip Rivers have a special bond being drafted together in the same 2004 draft class.
Floyd was an undrafted free agent out of the University of Wyoming and had to work his tail off to become an NFL receiver. Something that Rivers respects very much and their bond is fantastic. Losing Floyd just makes Rivers job more difficult. Keenan Allen is already out for the year after lacerating his kidney last week against the Baltimore Ravens.
Early reports are that Floyd suffered a right shoulder injury. His arm was in a sling in the locker room and he is scheduled for tests Monday morning to determine the severity of the injury.
Floyd has been a Charger for the length of his 11-year career and has totaled 114 games played. He has a very impressive career total of 17.3 yards per catch. He has 312 total receptions for 5,398 yards and 34 touchdowns. Not seeing #80 on the field or in the locker room will be very sad for the Chargers team.
Hopefully the news isn’t all that bad, but early indications are not promising. At the very least Floyd is looking at a multiple week injury. The Chargers do have a bye next week, so hopefully the team can mend to a certain degree.
Kendall Reyes and Jason Verrett were both injured on Monday as well. It has been a common theme for the Chargers this year. Injuries have decimated the team on both sides of the ball. Floyd’s injury is the most serious and the team will just have to wait for the result.
If Floyd were lost for the year, should the Chargers consider bringing in a free agent to play wide receiver? More specifically a veteran wide receiver who can give Rivers another reliable target. Wes Welker was just signed by the St. Louis Rams to bolster their receiving corp. Perhaps the Chargers can find someone to replace Floyd on the field.
Anyone the team would bring in could never match the chemistry that Rivers and Floyd have. That bond between the two Chargers players is something that cannot be recreated. We wish Malcom Floyd the best and hopefully Chargers fans will get one more chance to cheer on #80 this season.
