Cease has been on the market all off-season as the White Sox have attempted to move their former ace.
After two excellent seasons in 2021 and 2022, Cease had a down year last season, going 7-9 with a 4.58 ERA.
Nevertheless, the right-hander has been one of the hottest names on the trade market. He boasts an excellent four-pitch arsenal with a fastball between 95-98 mph. He is also one of the more affordable starters on the market. He is currently in year two of arbitration, making eight million, with one more year of team control in 2025 before going into free agency.
The return for Cease was hefty as the Padres parted with Drew Thorpe, Jairo Iriarte, Samuel Zavala, and Steven Wilson. Only Wilson was on the team’s 40-man roster, so no other move will be necessary to add Cease.
