San Diego State’s season ended on Tuesday night with an absolute blood bath of a loss to North Carolina.

The losses keep on coming for the Aztecs, as Nick Boyd told San Diego Union Tribune’s Mark Zeigler that he will be entering the transfer portal. Boyd went into Coach Dutcher’s office and let him know he had decided to finish his collegiate career elsewhere.

Boyd had been the Aztecs vocal leader and veteran on the team.

Boyd stated Tuesday after the loss that if you do not come back in the summer ready to work after this, you don’t love basketball. After this comment, Aztec fans assumed Boyd would be back, as he said earlier in the year that his transfer here was a two-year commitment.

Unfortunately for the Aztecs, Boyd changed his mind. Boyd stated he spoke with his uncle, who is very close to his heart. The Aztecs will now look to the transfer portal looking for a veteran guard who can help with the playmaking duties.

The one unknown right now is Magoon Gwath.

Gwath stated earlier this month he is looking to go to the pros. Does that mean staying on the Mesa? The Aztecs should expect a decision very soon from the star freshman on if he will stay or enter the portal. Even with the Boyd transfer, the Aztecs have some great players in the backcourt, assuming they all stay. BJ Davis, Taj DeGourville, Miles Byrd, and Reese Waters are all more than capable of running the offense. Per Zeigler, “The rest of the talks seem to have gone well, with most of the roster either committed or strongly leaning toward staying.”

What will the Aztecs do now with four available scholarships as of right now?

Two glaring holes are very clear. A veteran big who is an excellent rebounder, as well as a point guard to help handle playmaking duties, or even an off ball guard. The reason why an off-ball guard could be expected is due to the faith the coaching staff has in DeGourville to handle playmaking duties.
