The Padres wasted many opportunities on Friday to start their three-game series against the Rockies with a win.

On Saturday, the team seemed more focused on the task at hand, and the results were much better for the Padres.

Joey Lucchesi started the night throwing mostly fastballs and held the Rockies’ hitters in check with the heater. He struck out five of the first six hitters on the night, on fastballs that were well-located. “I knew what I had to do and I was well-prepared,” Lucchesi said after the game.

The left-handed pitcher was a bit wild on the night in the later innings, walking five batters, but he was able to withstand the free passes. Lucchesi finished with eight strikeouts in the game and went six innings for San Diego. The churveball specialist threw 90 pitches and lowered his season ERA to 3.84 on the season.

Wil Myers got things going offensively for the Padres as he slugged his 17th homer of the season in the 5th inning. The right-handed hitter went 3-for-4 on the night and is hitting over .300 in the last two weeks. He also stole his 14th base and has his OPS up to .740 on the season. “This was a really good game for him,” manager Andy Green told the media after the game.

Manny Machado is now one homer away from 30 on the season. He went 1-for-4 in the game with a two-run blast in the 6th. “He has been working hard. The team feeds off of him,” Andy Green said after the game.

San Diego has had bullpen issues this season but has gotten more of a consistent effort in the last few weeks. Andres Munoz continues to look solid, and Craig Stammen continued his dominance against the NL West. Both pitchers recorded a scoreless frame in the game. Munoz now has a 1.69 ERA in his rookie season.

Kirby Yates continued his magical 2019 season. He earned his 40th save of the season for the Friars, working around a one-out single to get the job done.

The Padres will try to take the series on Sunday in an afternoon game against the Rockies. 1:10 game time.

Eric Lauer (8-8 4.55 ERA) will battle Peter Lambert (2-6 7.19 ERA).
