Padres Down on the Farm: August 2 (Gore takes tough loss while Trammell collects first hit in Amarillo/Edwards Jr. debuts for El Paso)

The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 4-2 on Friday. The two AZL Padres teams were off on the day.

Here is a brief recap of the day’s action.

El Paso Chihuahuas Won 6-1 (66-45)

It was another big day for Ty France. The third baseman went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI to raise his batting average to .396 on the season. Aderlin Rodriguez collected three RBIs, including the first run of the game, as well in a 2-for-4 effort. Starter Jerry Keel pitched seven innings and allowed just one run while walking two and striking out three to earn the win. Carl Edwards Jr. made his debut with the organization today, striking out two batters in a shutout inning.

Amarillo Sod Poodles Lost 5-3 (57-51)

MacKenzie Gore took a hard-luck loss tonight after allowing three runs in 5.1 innings. The four walks he allowed were the most he has allowed in a game all season, but he also struck out six batters in the losing effort. Carlos Belen allowed an inherited runner to score while allowing two runs to score of own in the 1.2 innings he worked. Luis Torrens hit a single in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 15 games while Taylor Trammell got his first hit with the Sod Poodles when the official scorers changed his third at-bat to a hit after a throwing error allowed him to reach first base and take second on the aforementioned throw. Today was also the 21st consecutive sellout for Amarillo.

Lake Elsinore Storm Won 7-1 (58-52)

The Storm got an excellent start out of Aaron Leasher en route to a win over the Stockton Ports. Leasher pitched seven innings and allowed just one run while striking out four to lower his ERA to 3.23 with Lake Elsinore this season. Eguy Rosario had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs while Luis Campusano went 1-for-3 with a double. Nick Kuzia and Hansel Rodriguez both pitched shutout innings of relief. The two relievers have a 0.93 and 2.30 ERA with Lake Elsinore respectively.

Fort Wayne TinCaps Won 3-1 (48-60)

An excellent performance from Efrain Contreras led to TinCaps to an extra-innings victory over the Great Lakes Loons. The 19-year-old pitched 5.2 innings and allowed just the one run on three hits, striking out five batters and walking two in a no-decision. Mason Fox picked up the win by tossing two innings of shutout relief while striking out four. Tucupita Marcano collected an RBI single in the second inning, while Michael Curry broke a 1-1 tie in the tenth inning with his RBI double. An RBI groundout off the bat of Lee Solomon brought in the third run of the game.

Tri-City broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a three-run rally capped off by a Jordy Barley RBI single. Barley struck in the third inning with a solo home run, his eighth of the year. Kelvin Alarcon went 1-for-4 with an RBI in the game. Nick Thwaits pitched three innings into today’s game, giving up four hits while striking out three batters. Dievy Mendez pitched two innings while striking out one for his sixth save of the year.

The DSL Padres dropped a back-and-forth game after the DSL Blue Jays hit a walk-off single in the tenth inning. The Blue Jays initially took the lead in the fourth inning, but the Padres took a three-run lead by scoring two runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Edwin Rojas went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Both runs came off of a single in the eighth inning. Starting pitcher Abismael Paulino went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out three in a no-decision.
