Padres Down on the Farm: August 15 (Avila hurt in Amarillo/Blake Hunt three hits for FW/Allen homers for EL Paso)

San Diego Padres affiliates went 6-2 on Thursday.

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (72-50) Won 13-2

El Paso pounded the Salt Lake Bees by the score of 13-2 on Thursday. The Chihuahuas knocked out 19 hits in the game and were 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Four different El Paso hitters went deep in the game as they add to their PCL record for home runs in a season. Michael Gettys hit his 19th homer, and Austin Allen went deep for the 17th time in the 2019 season. Allen now has a .974 OPS this season for the Chihuahuas.

Amarillo Sod Poodles (65-56) Lost 16-3

The Soddies lost big to  Midland on Thursday by the score of 16-3. Pedro Avila left the game in the second inning with a serious arm injury. He fell into the ground after throwing a full-count pitch. He later walked off the field. Avila could be lost for the rest of the season. Lake Bachar was knocked around in the loss as he allowed nine earned runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Taylor Trammell hit his second homer for Amarillo, and Hudson Potts went deep for the 13th time on the season in the loss.

Pedro Avila- (Loss) 1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (46 pitches- 26 strikes)

Lake Elsinore Storm (62-58) Won 13-8

Lake Elsinore scored early and often in a 13-8 win over the Lancaster Jets. The Storm pounded out 18 hits in the game. Four different Storm’ players went deep in the win, led by Gabriel Arias who went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. He has a .798 OPS on the season and is now 10-for-45 (.378) in his last ten games. The 19-year-old is starting to really become an offensive threat. Luis Campusano went 1-for-5 with his 13th homer in the win. Gabe Mosser started the game and is now 3-0 on the season with a 4.50 ERA in the Cal League.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (55-65) Won 12-4

The TinCaps were victorious pulling away in a game against the Lansing Lugnuts. Fort Wayne got a great day at the plate from catcher Blake Hunt who went 3-for-5 with a triple. He has a .715 OPS this season in the Midwest League. Efrain Contreras started the game and went five innings for the win. He struck out three and walked a batter in the game. He now has a 3.84 ERA in Fort Wayne. Henry Henry threw three shutout innings out of the pen and lowered his ERA to 3.15 on the season. Justin Lopez homered for the 11th time in the win. The 19-year-old has shown tremendous power and has been playing shortstop since CJ Abrams was placed on the IL last week.

Henry Henry- 3 IP, 1 H, BB, 2 K (31 pitches- 20 strikes)

Efrain Contreras- (Win) 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 K (80 pitches- 59 strikes)

Tri-City Dust Devils (28-31) Won 9-5

The Dust Devils won a 9-5 game against the Everett AquaSox. Four runs in the 9th were the difference as Reinaldo Ilarraza hit a grand slam with two outs in the inning. He went 3-for-5 in the game and scored twice. The 20-year-old infielder is starting to swing a good bat in Tri-City. The switch-hitting Venezuelan native has a .747 OPS at the moment. Nick Gatewood went deep, hitting his 3rd of the season for Tri-City. Angel Acevedo started the game and went 5 2/3 innings on Thursday. Tom Colletti earned the win after getting the last four out of the game. He has a 1.98 ERA so far this season.

AZL Padres 1 (28-18) Won 3-2

The Padres improved to 10-games over .500 as they rallied to win a 3-2 game against the AZL White Sox. The winning run scored on a double-play ball off the bat of Hudson Head in the top of the 9th, which was the difference. The 2019 draft pick went 2-for-5 in the game with a double. He has a .800 OPS in his first 115 professional at-bats. Lefty, Jesus Gonzalez started the game and went five innings for the Padres. He has a 5.44 ERA after allowing one earned run on Thursday. Martin Carrasco earned the save for the Padres. The 19-year-old  right-handed pitcher from Tijuana has a 1.86 ERA in Peoria.

AZL Padres 2 (31-16) Lost 12-0

The AZL Padres were blown out on Thursday by the AZL Reds by the score of 12-0. Six different Padres pitchers allowed 13 hits and 12 runs to a Reds team that was crushing the baseball. 25-year-old Mark Zimmerman started the game. His first pitching appearance since 2017. The right-handed pitcher threw a scoreless inning, walking two. The Padres team did not do much offensively as the team only managed three hits in the game and were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The DSL Padres beat the DSL Blue Jays by the score of 6-2 on Thursday. 19-year-old Gilberto Sosa started and went six innings pitched for the win. He has a 4.446 ERA now in the DSL. The Padres stole five bases in the game, led by Euribiel Angeles who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. He has a .725 OPS this season in the D.R. Charlis Aquino went 1-for-3 with two runs. The Padres only struck out two times in the game and walked eight times.
