The San Diego Padres need all the good fortune they can get these days after losing Fernando Tatis Jr. last week to a back injury. The rookie will likely miss the remaining of the 2019 season, and that was a huge blow to the young Padres.

In the east coast presently, the Friars had an opportunity to take a series from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Joey Lucchesi toed the rubber for San Diego, and he had a very positive day.

The left-handed pitcher went six innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. He struck out four and walked two on the day in his 109-pitch effort. That was Lucchesi’s highest pitch count for the season in a single game. He labored through a tough first inning to settle down for the Padres. If not for a two-out walk and a double in the 6th, Lucchesi’s numbers would be even better.

Luis Urias and Austin Hedges provided the offense on the day. Urias hit his second homer of the season in the 4th inning as he took Phillies’ starter Jason Vargas deep to right field. Urias ended the day 2-for-4 at the plate and has his average up to .194 on the season after an ice-cold start.

Hedges grandly celebrated his 27th birthday, as he was 4-for-4 at the plate including his ninth homer of the season in the 7th inning. Hedges’ blast gave Joey Lucchesi the win for San Diego.

The victory was preserved by Kirby Yates, who recorded a save for the second day in a row. He struck out the side preserving the win for San Diego.

The Padres will now head to Cincinnati to take on the Reds in a three-game series which starts on Monday.

Eric Lauer will be on the mound as the Padres will face Trevor Bauer and the Reds. 4:10 PM start time
