Padres Down on the Farm: May 17 (Jason Vosler with 4 hits, Gore with 6 K’s)

El Paso tallied 16 hits on Friday, while Amarillo held on late to win against the RoughRiders.

The Padres’ minor league affiliates went 3-1 on the day.

El Paso Chihuahuas Won 11-5 (28-13 on the season)

El Paso turned things around Friday with a win over the Isotopes after losing 10-2 Thursday night. The Chihuahuas got off to a quick 4-0 lead in the second inning after an RBI double by Boog Powell followed by a home run by Jason Vosler. Their starter, Dietrich Enns, allowed five runs while striking out three through five-and-two-thirds innings. The Chihuahuas added on in the sixth and seventh innings after Matthew Batten singled with bases loaded, increasing their lead to 9-3. The El Paso bullpen shut things down after that as Luis Perdomo, Robert Stock, and Paco Rodriquez tossed three scoreless innings in relief, totaling six strikeouts and securing the win for Chihuahuas. El Paso piled up 16 hits, four of them for extra bases.

The Chihuahuas’ bats were active Friday night against Isotopes starter Jeff Hoffman, including Enns, who recorded a single. Three players have averages over .300, including Matthew Batten (.309), Powell (.380), and Luis Urias (.333), who went 1-for-4 Friday. Vosler had his first four-hit game of the season.

Amarillo Sod Poodles Won 7-5 (17-22 on the season)

The Sod Poodles bounced back from a loss Thursday with a victory over the Frisco RoughRiders Friday. Amarillo’s starter Miguel Diaz recorded his first win after pitching five innings and striking out five hitters. His control was working in his favor as he only threw 15 balls out of 57 pitches. Diaz’s three earned runs were met with offensive support by the Sod Poodles in the fifth and sixth innings, who put up seven to make the game 7-3. Luis Torrens raised his average to .303 after going 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Kyle Overstreet and Buddy Reed both went 2-for-4 while Reed hit an RBI double. Blake Rogers gave up two runs in the eighth inning making the game 7-5, but Andres Munoz replaced him and recorded his fourth save and struck out two in the ninth.

Lake Elsinore Storm Lost 1-0 (20-22 on the season)

After the Storm shutout the San Jose Giants 6-0 Thursday, both teams experienced silent bats Friday night. Mackenzie Gore continued his successful season as he struck out six batters through five innings while allowing only three hits. The 20-year-old leads the California League with a 1.07 ERA through 42 innings pitched. Steven Wilson and Jordan Guerrero relieved Gore and had the Giants hitless through the ninth inning while recording four strikeouts each. The pitcher’s duel came to an end in the bottom of the tenth after Hansel Rodriquez gave up an RBI single to the Giant’s right fielder Randy Norris, resulting in the 1-0 loss.

The Giants lead the three-game series 1-0.

Fort Wayne TinCaps won 3-2 (17-22 on the season)

Xavier Edwards and Juan Fernandez continued their explosive offensive with doubles in the first inning, followed with a home run by Justin Lopez to give the TinCaps and an early 3-0 lead. Sam Keating bounced back from his loss last week by going five-and-one-third innings while giving up two runs with eight strikeouts, giving him his first win. The TinCaps pitched six scoreless innings while the defense put up a zero in the error column.

Fort Wayne will face Josh Winckowski Saturday, who has an ERA of 1.71 through 37 innings pitched.
