Fleet Re-Sign WR Kyle Lewis & Place OL John Montelus on IR

A few roster moves were made on Friday, two days before the Fleet have their rematch against their biggest rivals, the San Antonio Commanders.

Offensive Lineman John Montelus was put on the injured reserve due to a shoulder injury. Wide Receiver Shay Fields was released and former San Diego Fleet member Kyle Lewis from Cal Poly University was brought back to the team.

John Montelus injured his shoulder last week and didn’t practice Thursday and Friday before being placed on injured reserve. This ended up opening a roster spot for the Fleet.

The Fleet released wide receiver Shay Fields, formerly of the Colorado Buffaloes. He hadn’t played in either of the past two games for unknown reasons and was allowed to leave camp.

In response to the recent moves at the wide receiver position, the Fleet resigned Kyle Lewis to the 52 man roster. He had a great camp and I was generally surprised when Lewis was released. He was responsible for more than a couple of highlights during camp.

During college, Kyle Lewis played in a wing-T offense that limited the types of routes he ran. But in college, he proved to be dynamic with the ball in his hands. His speed allows him to be the solid deep threat the Fleet have seemed to lack these past two weeks (averaged 21.74 yards per catch his senior year). He only had 23 catches that senior year. He also spent a lot of time returning kicks. This will also help since the Fleet hasn’t had the best time returning punts. Kyle Lewis’s speed and skill could put him in that spot immediately.

While the loss of an offensive lineman is never good, the Fleet should make a corresponding move to add depth next week.

I really like the resigning Kyle Lewis. He is a dynamic athlete that could instantly make a difference in this offense and on special teams.
