This Friday the Mexico women’s national team announced its roster that will be training to compete in the 2019 Cyprus Women’s cup.

Among the 26 players that were called was Xolos Femenil’s goalkeeper Itzel Gonzalez.

This is Gonzalez’s first-ever call-up to the Mexico national team and it is well deserved as she has been a consistent goalkeeper for Xolos Femenil. The Club Tijuana ladies have struggled since the league has started but Itzel Gonzalez has been a bright spot on the team and has played in almost every single game.

Gonzalez has now played in 43 total matches with Xolos Femenil and still has a long career ahead of her at just 24 years old. The Mexican goalkeeper is a Tijuana native but grew up on both sides of the border as she attended the University of California San Diego and studied structural engineering.

Gonzalez quit her day job to pursue her dream and now has a great opportunity to represent her native country at the international level. The 24-year-old shot-stopper is not guaranteed a spot on the final roster that will play in the Cyprus Cup but will train with the team from Jan.14 to Jan.22 in Mexico City.

The Tijuana native will have some heavy competition for the starting job with Alejandria Godinez of Pachuca and Cecilia Santiago of Club America also on the roster. The Cyprus Cup will run from Feb. 24 to March 8 and hopefully, Gonzalez can earn a spot on the final roster and get some playing time.
