In our country, the government is going through its longest shutdown in United States history. For a little over three weeks, government workers haven’t been able to earn a paycheck due to the stalemate.
Of course, a nationwide government shutdown affects workers in San Diego as well. Countless families suddenly find themselves out of a job at the time, being unable to work or provide an income.
So, the San Diego Sockers are opening the doors of Pechanga Arena to all of those affected.
That’s right. Sunday’s game against the Turlock Express is free to all federal employees and contract workers who provide a government ID at the box office. With the proper ID, workers can get a free ticket as well as a free pass for children aged eight and under.
“So many families in our community are suffering right now, and it is our goal to knock down the wall between making ends meet and treating the family to a fun night out,” said Sockers Chief Marketing Officer Craig Elsten. “With Furloughed Workers Night, we want to give affected families a great chance to relax and enjoy a couple hours worry-free as they watch the Sockers go for another big win.”
Scorned workers have a great reason to visit the Sockers. The team is rolling with a six-game winning streak and is currently sitting in first place in the Pacific division. Team captain Kraig Chiles is in the top five in the MASL for goals scored and points, while goalkeeper Boris Pardo leads all keepers in win percentage (.773), goals against average (3.39) and wins (8).
Such an offer has not yet been offered by other San Diego teams, but the Sockers hope that others follow in their stead to help the people of San Diego. Even if they do not follow in their footsteps, the other San Diego sports teams have done their part in helping America’s Finest City. The Padres have taken over the annual blood drive left behind by the Chargers, and the Seals and their owner Joe Tsai have already sparked the city’s interest in the National Lacrosse League.
Sunday’s match is also Youth Sports Night, with the Sockers honoring our community’s youth sports champions before the game. All fans, furloughed or not, receive a Retro Logo Hat at the gate, courtesy of Cal Coast Credit Union.
Tickets for Sunday’s match can be purchased by the general public by phone at (866) 799-GOAL, online at Sockers.com, or at the Pechanga Arena San Diego box office.
