October is coming to a close and a crucial day for San Diego Sports is edging closer as the midterm elections are just a few days away.

The fate of Qualcomm Stadium will be decided on November 6, as Measure E (SoccerCitySD) and Measure G (SDSU West) will go head to head.

The more involved project recently does seem to be SoccerCity SD as there have been several events in support of it. Former USMNT superstar Landon Donovan has been one of the major advocates of the project, and recently another notable figure from North American soccer has also displayed his support.

On Tuesday, October 30, 2018, SoccerCity SD released a video that featured former Mexico, Club America, and Xolos’ manager Miguel Herrera. “El Piojo” spoke in Spanish and said, “Hello San Diego, vote on November 6, so San Diego can have a soccer team. We need you! Let’s go! We can do it with you! Vote For Measure E.”

There is a large Mexican and Mexican-American community in San Diego. Based on a 2017 census report, there is over a 30-percent Hispanic population in the county. Miguel Herrera is specifically known in the region as he coached the Tijuana Xolos from 2015-2017, where he had two first-place finishes in the Liga MX.

“Piojo” is known on a national scale as he also coached the Mexico national team before coaching Club Tijuana, and he is currently the manager of Club America, arguably the most popular team in Mexico. The Mexican manager could definitely swing some votes with his video and it will be interesting to see if he has any involvement going forward.
