Xolos Femenil played its fourth game of the 2018 Apertura season this past Sunday, Aug. 6, against Lobos BUAP away from home.

The game was played at the Estadio Universitario BUAP and it was a clash that the Club Tijuana ladies were expected to win.

Lobos BUAP had a decent start to the new season, but just joined the league in this 2018 Apertura. Xolos Femenil had accumulated seven points from its first three games and had defeated very good teams, like Pumas UNAM and Pachuca.

The border city team was recently coming off an impressive 1-0 win against Pachuca, who was undefeated before that match. These previous results did not translate into this matchup as Lobos BUAP used its home-field advantage and picked up a 2-1 win.

The first half of the match was very quiet and all three goals came in the second half in Puebla. Lobos BUAP struck first when the second half began with a goal by veteran forward Abigail De Jesus. The shot was from long range and Xolos’ goalkeeper Itzel Gonzalez may have been able to do more than what she did.

Andrea Rodebaugh’s team brought it back in the 47th minute with a goal by Inglis Hernandez that tied it up. It was Hernandez ’s third goal of the season as she gets closer to surpassing the current top scorer, Alison Hecnary Gonzalez, who leads the league with five goals.

The team from Puebla then regained the lead in the 75th minute with another long-range shot, but this time by Ana Perez. Itzel Gonzalez could have definitely done more on that particular goal that led to the Xolos’ defeat.

It was a rare off-night for Itzel Gonzalez and the Xolos’ defense as Club Tijuana walked away with its first loss of the season. The border city team is still having a great season, currently third in Group 1 with seven points, and will now enjoy three consecutive home games at the Estadio Caliente, starting with Club America this next Monday, Aug. 13.
