Former San Diego State standout Trey Kell has found a home, and he found it in Bosnia and Herzegovina with KK Igokea of the Adriatic and Baltic League.

Kell was a homegrown player, playing at St. Augustine High School in San Diego before attending school on the Mesa.

He had four successful seasons, culminating with an injury-riddled senior season that had him third on the team in scoring with 10.5 points and first in assists with 4.1 per game.

While things seemed to go wrong his senior year, he was on an upward trajectory throughout his career, increasing his scoring average every season up until his final year. Now he transitions from beautiful San Diego to Laktasi, where he will get the opportunity to immerse himself in a new culture, both on and off the court.

With Igokea, Kell will get an opportunity to get minutes, and possibly start.

Igokea has won the last four Bosnian Cups and five out of the last six championships, losing in the finals this past season to Zrinjski Mostar. They are a good team with a strong domestic roster, however Kell is a great player and the situation seems built for him to shine. By playing on a strong team, Kell will ensure that he receives top coaching and the opportunity to play in some competitive leagues.

The situation seems like a good one in both the short and long term.

Nothing beats being able to play a game at a high level as a job, and Kell now has that chance. While the details of the contract are unknown, what is known is that Kell has an opportunity to be a professional basketball player overseas. What I know is that Aztec fans could not be prouder of him and will be cheering for him from back home.

Thanks for the past four years, Trey, and best of luck in your future.

I am a big Aztec fan and have been covering the men's basketball program for the last three years. A San Diego State alum, my passion for SDSU basketball grew from watching the the basketball team play while I was at school. I look forward to bringing Aztec news here to East Village Times.
