The San Diego Padres’ season is nearly upon us, so we thought we would bring in the “Blog Father” for a chat.

Geoff Young has been writing about the San Diego Padres for a long time. He is very knowledgeable about the team, both past and present.

It was awesome to pick his brain on some Padres-related topics. We found out his thoughts on Eric Hosmer. I also asked him about the Freddy Galvis trade and the fact the Padres dealt a young hurler named Enyel De Los Santos to obtain him. Interesting to hear what he has to say.

We speak about Austin Hedges and Hunter Renfroe. We delve into Wil Myers and whether or not we can expect a huge 2018 from him. All three players are expected to be major contributors, or are they? We ponder Renfroe’s future with the team. Geoff tells it like it is.

The Padres’ farm system is something special. We briefly talk about the Latin influence in the system and what it means for the future of this team.

Joey Lucchesi and Eric Lauer are briefly talked about as each young hurler was certainly impressive in camp. Geoff gives his thoughts on Lucchesi and what we can expect from him in the future. We all are excited for what he showed against major league hitters this spring.

The Tyson Ross and Chris Young signings are something we all talk about. We wanted to know Geoff’s thoughts on bringing in those former stars in a time when the team could be rolling out young pitchers who need experience. Ross and Young are both on the bubble of making this 2018 Padres’ team.

Geoff also gives his thoughts on Josh Naylor as we talk about the fact he is a man without a position now. We will see what A.J. Preller does with this talented young infielder.

All and all, a great show. We thank Geoff for his time.  Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Thank you. Enjoy.

  1. Hey guys, great podcast! I take sides with Don here, give Renfroe a chance, he’s got a lot of potential. One season is not enough time to rush to judgement. We need to see 1,000 ABs, or more like in Gyorko’s case. I came here to alert you guys to a promotional opportunity for your website. There is a podcast network called Locked On. They have daily (weekday) podcasts devoted to each NBA and NFL team, and this year they are expanding their coverage to include MLB teams. There is no Locked On Padres podcast, so I can’t think of anyone else who would be better suited to do it than you guys. It’d get you guys exposure and promotion for your website and it’d be unique, because it’d be the only daily Padres podcast on the internet. What do you guys think?

  2. I listened to the whole thing. Geoff seems like he has followed the Padres for quite awhile. The other guy you had on there, I took exception with a couple of his takes and general vibe on the Podcast on Renfroe. Renfroe has had a total of 515 ML AB’s and you 3 want to write him off. You would think you ALL learned a lesson with Rizzo, who struggled here, so we let our Ex-GM steal him away for a less than servicabe arm for the Cubs. He hit .141-.281-.242 in 128 AB’s for us. Then the first two years in Chicago he did OK the first in limited time, .285-.342-.463 but slumped back to .233-.323-.419 in his first full season, now he has 4 straight seasons averaging a .900 OPS, made 3 AS teams and was one of their main parts to a team in 2016 that Won their First WS Title in their history. The Cubs didn’t talk about sitting him or sending him to MiLB, using him as a part time player, THEY PLAYED HIM, PERIOD. Historically their is Schmidt, and more recently ARod and Trout though that was smaller sample sizes. When you look over ALL of our prospects what a players preceived ceiling is plays a big role as you develop them and who advances and who does not. Margot, Hedges, and Renfroe have the highest ceilings of any of the current ML players with Tatis and Urias ready to join this group. Myers used to be one of these highly thought of prospects but he has 5 seasons of ML time now and is not living upto ALL of this hype, except one half of 2016 season. Sounds like another player we just brought back, Chase Headley. You guys value walks way too much in your evaluations of players. You knock Renfroe for ONLY driving in 58 runs on 26 HR’s last season, like he has the ability to say where he bats in the order or can control the players that hit before him and if they get on base or not.
