Chargers’ Philly Riv & the Kids Pin an “L” On the Donkey (Week-6 Recap)

Alas, the San Diego Chargers I lose my mind over showed up. Tom Telesco had an excellent draft in April. It was on display Thursday Night at Qualcomm Stadium. Not without some last-minute drama of course. No matter, the Dan Fouts inspired Color Rush jersey’s were too much for the Broncos to handle.

On San Diego’s opening drive, second-round draft pick Hunter Henry introduced himself to the masses. Antonio Gates is on the verge of breaking the all-time tight end scoring record, but Hunter’s time is now, folks. He is getting better each week and his development is exciting.

Rivers completed a 12-yard pass to Hunter Henry on the second play of the second quarter to move past Dan Fouts on the all time yardage list for the Chargers. That’s quite fitting on a night where the Fouts era jerseys were on display. Rivers was a modest, but effective, 18 of 29 for 178 yards and one touchdown.

Fifth-round draft pick, linebacker Jatavis Brown, was everywhere in this game. He recorded 14 tackles, one sack, and forced a fumble late on Demaryius Thomas that was huge. While the fumble wasn’t the last play in the game, it helped decide the final score.

First-round draft pick, defensive end Joey Bosa, didn’t jump off the stat sheet with many tackles tonight. Bosa’s hurries and constant pressure did pay huge dividends vs Denver. He looks like he is the real deal. Bosa has only played in two games, but has people talking league-wide. Second year running back Melvin Gordon had a hard-earned 94 yards on 27 carries. Early in the third quarter, Gordon broke a 49-yard run which was a new career high for him.

Let’s Clean It Up:

Travis Benjamin needs to be stripped of all return duties immediately. Denver’s only first half points came in the first half on a muffed punt by Benjamin. San Diego went into the half up 10-3.  It was by no means a perfect game, but the team overcame its mistakes. Sixth-round draft pick, punter Drew Kaser, had a solid night. Griff Whalen did kick returns all game long, while Dexter McCluster handled nearly all punt returns. San Diego went on to a 21-3 lead before they made it interesting “Again”. Denver pooch punted after surrendering a safety. It was beautiful hanging punt, muffed by offensive lineman Kenny Wiggins. Yes, Kenny Wiggins. I mean, what the heck was he doing attempting to catch a punt? Of course Denver rallied late with a touchdown as a result of the muffed punt.

Game Ball:

Jatavis Brown had two incredible plays in the midst of the Denver rally to keep the game in control, a sack on Siemian and an aforementioned fumble on Demaryius Thomas. The score was 21-10 with 3:36 remaining. It was a huge play because San Diego’s offense became stagnant. Denver got into field goal range with 27 seconds and closed the gap to 21-13.

No, No, No.. Oh Okay, Thank Goodness:

Denver attempts an onside kick late in the fourth quarter and recovers with virtually no time elapsing  off the clock. The San Diego defense stands firm, leaving Denver with a 4th & 1 desperation pass with eight seconds left. Dexter McCoil uses his length and bats the ball down…GAME OVER!!! I have long said this team is very talented. Their 2-4 record does them no justice. I don’t believe we have seen the last of our San Diego Chargers. Good job, boys! I predicted 27-17…21-13 works too.
