The San Diego Chargers made a roster move today in releasing center/guard Michael Huey. It comes as no surprise after the team signed veteran Matt Slauson this week. Huey was simply a victim of the numbers crunch and the Chargers did a favor to Huey in releasing him early enough to potentially catch on with another team.

Offensive line issues plagued the Chargers last season and something needed to be done. The team added the veteran Slauson and also drafted two rookies. Max Tuerk and Donavon Clark will definitely help the team now and into the future. The Chargers need to protect Philip Rivers in order to get the most out of the team offensively.

Huey has yet to play a single snap in the NFL. He suited up for the Redskins in 2014 but failed to play. He started 20 games at the University of Texas during his collegiate career. He also spent three years in the Arena Football League, where he led the Arizona Rattlers to three consecutive Arena League titles.

Tom Telesco signed Huey on January 5th of this year and it looked like he might have an opportunity to contribute. The draft and free agent signing of Slauson was the nail in the coffin for his Chargers career. This was Hueys’ second tenure with the Chargers as he spent three weeks with the team in August of 2011.

Surprisingly to some Chargers fans the team elected to hold onto Trevor Robinson. The 26-year-old Robinson started 13 games for the team last year but was horribly unproductive. He is has the experience Huey lacks and that is simply enough. It really was a no-brainer to let Huey walk and keep Robinson as a backup. Hopefully Robinson will only play sporadically.
