Padres Series Recap: Padres Take Two of Three Games From Yankees

Game one of the series started with no worries at all. However, the game would turn into a stressful nail biter towards the end. The Padres would start it off nicely with three runs in the first inning off Nathan Eovaldi. Melvin Upton Jr. would get an RBI single. Then Derek Norris would put two more runs on the board with a double. The Yanks would earn back a run in the second inning. However, the Pads would manage to get that run back themselves in their half of the second. Ryan Schimpf would blast his first major league home run to make it a 4-1 game.

Things would then stay quiet until the fifth inning of the game. Will Myers would blast a home run himself. The two run blast would make it a 6-1 game. Brian McCann would continue the action in the next half inning. He would get a solo shot to make it a 6-2 affair. Colin Rea would be done after that sixth inning. Rea would yet again show that brilliance that he has shown in past starts. Rea would have a masterful night going six innings and only allowing a single earned run. To add to it Rea would also only allow a single walk on the night. With Rea providing six strong innings you would have thought that the game would be a lock. Well not necessarily.

The crucial run of the game would come in the bottom of the seventh inning. A passed ball delivered by Anthony Swarzak would make it a 7-2 game. Little did we know that passed ball would turn out to be decisive in this game. We wouldn’t see any more action until the top of the ninth inning. Matt Thornton and Brandon Maurer would allow four runs to cross the plate. The game would end in a very stressful manner. Carlos Beltran would be on third base with two outs and Brett Gardner on the plate. Fortunately for Brandon Maurer and the Padres, Gardner would end up grounding out to end the game. The bullpen would come very close to a very disappointing end result. Overall that would be the negative on the day. Other than that everything else was perfect. Rea would have an amazing performance. The offense would also be great, providing seven runs on the day. Overall a great day for the Padres.

Game two of the series would be another great game for the Padres. This time it would be even better as the bullpen would do their job effectively. Game two would really be a nice pitching matchup. Ivan Nova would be pretty good on the Yankees behalf. He would only allow a run and a walk through five and a third innings of work. For the Friars, Drew Pomeranz would be even better. Pomeranz would really end up having one of his better starts of the season. He would pitch seven innings, allow one run, no walks and strike out seven. The bullpen for the Pads would be a lot better in contrast to Friday night’s game. Ryan Buchter and Brad Hand would provide a couple of scoreless frames to keep the game tied at one.

Heading into the ninth inning the score would be 1-1. Extra innings seemed inevitable. The lights out left-handed pitcher, Andrew Miller would be on the mound. Melvin Upton Jr. would stand at the plate. He would mange to do the unthinkable, just like he has been all season long. Melvin has done things that no one even thought he was capable of doing. From stealing home to the amazing catches, Melvin had done it all. Well this time around, Melvin would go yard off of Miller on the very first pitch that he would throw. Melvin would win the game for the Padres in incredible fashion. He would yet again show some serious value. If I were a playoff contender team, I would be desperate to have this guy like this on my team. I mean it is just incredible what Melvin has done this season. Overall this game would be a great one for the Padres. There would definitely be a lot less offense in game two. But the pitching would be a lot better. Overall I would have to say that this would be the Padres best performance of the series. This game would also secure the series victory for the Friars. But could they pull off the sweep?

The San Diego Padres have yet to pull off a sweep heading into Sunday’s game. Well things would stay indifferent after Sunday afternoons game. Andrew Cashner would be on the hill for the Padres. The man would beat the Yankees back in 2013 and would not disappoint. Cashner would have a strong outing allowing an earned run in six innings of work. Unfortunately the Padres offense and bullpen would disappoint in the final game of the series. As far as the offense goes they would only score a run through eight innings. Yangervis Solarte would provide it via a solo shot off Chad Green. As predicted Green turned out to be a real menace to the Padres bats. Green would have a very strong performance. Through six innings he would only allow that run with no walks and eight strikeouts.

The Padres bullpen would also heavily disappoint the team with four runs allowed. That would include two home runs by Mark Teixeira. One of which would be his 400th home run of his career. The biggest bust from the bullpen in this game would turn out to be Kevin Quackenbush. He would allow three runs in only a third of an inning of work. The Padres would make their final stride towards a positive result in the ninth inning. Alex Dickerson would deliver a two run shot to make it a 6-3 game. That would turn out to be the final score of the game. Without the bullpen blunders, we could have been talking about the Padres first sweep of the season. The bullpen would allow four total runs. So without those mistakes, we could have seen another walk off hero in Alex Dickerson. Unfortunately things just didn’t turn out that way. The Padres would again lose sight of that elusive series sweep. Overall though this would be a great series for the Padres. Starting pitching wise, it might have just been the best yet this season. The starters would combine for three earned runs in 19 innings of work. Anytime you can see that type of performance, you should be satisfied with your team’s performance. Go Padres!
