The San Diego Chargers announced on Jan. 1 that Mike McCoy has been relieved of his duties as the team’s head coach.

The announcement came a little more than an hour after the conclusion of the Chargers’ 37-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. With that loss, the team finished 5-11 for their second straight losing season.

McCoy served as the Chargers’ head coach for four years, compiling a 28-38 record over that span, including a 1-1 record in the playoffs.

The team finished 9-7 his first season and secured the final playoff spot in the AFC playoff picture.

San Diego finished 9-7 the following year, but missed out on the playoffs with a loss against the Kansas City Chiefs. In 2015-2016, a season that saw the team plagued by injuries, the Chargers finished 4-12.

During McCoy’s time in San Diego, the Chargers compiled a 7-17 record in the AFC West.
